I'll keep my eyes open! congrats!
That looks great!
2nd the door knob....from personal experience.. whoops.
my only problem with down is the $$$$$. Even for a DIY project the down alone would cost ALMOST as much as buying whatever I intend to make.
I found an "All Weather Blanket" http://www.survivorgeek.com/products/All-Weather-Blanket-w%7B47%7D-Hood.html.
It looks like a more durable version of a space blanket. I was thinking of trying...
@BackpackerGuy, that sound like a good idea too. I'm going to have a few feet of left over tyvek so I could try that out. worst comes to worst I just find some pebbles and tie it off.
by the way,...
A lot of people use 70D vs. something like 30D because it is usually a lot more cost effective. It'll always work out better for quality and weight to just purchase a factory made Sil. Unless someone...
I have approx. 70yds of 70D 1.9oz Ripstop Nylon in Foliage Green. I would like to trade someone some silnylon or something comparable. I am looking for around 10-15 yds of the fabric and would be...
well that is good to know, i have yet to order them but they looked legit.
So far I have not used an UQ. I have plans to make an IX UQ soon so i can try one out.
@deerfight, Just curious why do you prefer a pad over an UQ? I'm going to test it either way for a matter of...
haha, i guess i could have mentioned that the tyvek is going to be used as a 9'x11' tarp. i need a few tieouts and was just wondering how to go about doing that. It would not be subject to a heavy...
I searched around a bit but I couldn't find what I was looking for. I saw some stick on tyvek grommets http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/251378419172?lpid=82 like these. They look like they are based on...
I have a wide hammock at arount 70" made of taffeta and it is pretty comfy,i feel like i get a flatter lay with it compared to my 60 somthing nylon hammocks. but it could just be that it is a...
I used a piece of 1" conduit tubing for my bar. Is there a way break down the bar(into 2 or 4 pieces) and (reliably and safely) put it back together for transport? I have been looking into possible...
check back with diygearsuppy. they have over 100 in stock.
Is it better to have the line that keeps the legs from walking in the middle of the legs or at the bottom? or does it even matter?
+1 to the dutch method, it's sooo easy. it's not really cheating ;)
I really like the idea of simplicity here. Very clean job! I might borrow from this a bit. I'm just not too sure how much i trust the plastic clip, I think the buckle would be fine, but maybe a loop...
Well that is reassuring. I purchased this pad but have yet to test it out too much. at least it has good reviews! I was using a foam pad, but it was way too bulky. Everyting i use fits into my...
Is it better to have the stabilizing rope midway up the boards or at the bottom? or does it even matter. also.. That IS what the "D" stands for lol...(as of now)
How would you use tape? would that be any easier? I fount using a length of regular crafting wire to be relatively easy, on the second whoopie :D there is mos def a technique to this.
the boards are a couple inches over 6' although if I ever make another stand I'll probably make them a little longer considering the boards come 8' long.
Try not to get too down on the forums, most people are very helpful :)
If you are looking for a down alternative check out
http://www.downlitebedding.com/
They have some alternatives that are...
These things are great! I used some 2x3s (as they were on sale) and a decent
hinge with 3/8 nuts, bolts and washers and 1" conduit tubing. I haven't added the
rope around the feet (to keep it...
Cuben Fiber can work if it is the thicker variety, the lighter stuff doesn't seem to hold up too well being used as a hammock. It would probably work if it was double layered, but then it's actually...
This was my first attempt at making whoopie slings, I uses 7/64 Amsteel (Blue).
I made two equal length an I have a section that I plan to make an adjustable
ridgeline from structural length to...
the fabric was 114" long before i whipped the ends. I lost about 8-9" after whipping. the fabric was something around 60" wide. I used a 70D ripstop.
I would agree with the longer hammock idea. I found some of the shorter hammocks that i have made to be very comfy at first. but the longer hammocks seem to be more comfortable in the long run.
BAH!! that is a good deal, if i could find a good deal i'd use down on my next project. alas the amount of down that i need would cost way too much. I'll keep my eyes open, good catch!
I really enjoy making my own gear. This was the first thing i made, then a made several other hammocks, stuff pillows, gear pouches, bug nets, stoves(wood/gas).. etc. When i get some pictures more...
straight down is better by far...and more $$$. primaloft seems to clump a little and gather a little. but you can fix that by sorta fluffing it. this stuff does not perform when wet fyi.
MAD777, the turtledog stand looks great, but i haven't found any designs for a truly "portable" stand that comes close to 2.2lbs. I'm an ultralight/lightweight backpacker depending on the season and...
In all honesty I use the slippery overhand and the bowline for just about everything. however i think i might try out the taughtline hitch and rolling hitch. those look pretty handy, thanks...
Nice hammock, just curious, is that PVC for your stand?
Sorry about that, the pictures should work now

Inside view, I replaced the foam pad with an air pad, much better....
Hey looks good! CountryRoads is probably right, after i made my first i kept making them. i made a few of the same style, then started branching out. I have a tablecloth that i purchased. glad to...
Has anyone had any experience with these Handy Hammock stand from
http://www.handyhammock.co.uk/.
They look pretty interesting but im not sure i want to spend the money on it. I like the idea of...

Whoops! I'll fix the photos when i get home.
i prefer the 7/64, that's what my whoopie sling is and my tarp rope too!
i found an alternative to down, that i ended up with permaloft (the fluffy kind) have not gotten it yet but im gonna have a ton left over! only 40 bucks for 5lbs.
they really do work well, i made two one noseeum, and another one out of tulle.
I followed shugemery on this one. that dude is funny.
Still works! 50' of 7/64 only 12 bucks! thanks!!!
Well it's a little late on the post but here is my first try at a hammock. I uses 70D Ripstop nylon, I followed Jeff's directions for the gathered end hammock.
Outside view with the net:...
hey that's something for me to think about. thanks!
hmmm, ill have to check into it.
I need to learn to make whoopie... slings lol.
https://gossamergear.com frequently has Dyneema on sale, plus your tarp rope can act as a backup for your primary. I was using 550 cord with some self tensioning bungie attached.
may have just been the ones i was using, but mine kept slowwwwllllyyy slipping over about 4 hrs. i think ill stick with whoopies.
I use a small piece of 550 knotted and hanging down. works fine, but i like the rubber.
