Curious if you get any dew on your topquilts without a tarp.
Where was the site you went to?
Looks like fun.
Last spring was there. Seemed every campsite was roped off by the Rangers for reclamation. Did they open those up?
I like the thinking. Let us know if the shifting is less. I made one TQ with horizontal baffles and struggled with everything. But it's very warm and down stays in place.
Lovely gifts. Better than a fruitcake.
Just curious on the U-shaped baffles. How did you sew them? And why the shape?
You did not name which Arrowhead tarp you measured. Was it the Toxoway or the Shangri-la?
6113. Got it yesterday. A Burrow and incubator
They sent me a email once shipped. Very quick and easy. Should be here today.
I am looking in purchasing one of these and was wondering what would be the difference in the two fabrics. The weight difference seems to be negligble (1 oz). So is there a performance difference?
Which shoulder straps are on the Catalyst? How old?
Look up Germantown Park. Did a weekend there last year. They have backcountry sites that are nice and enough trails to do mileage of choice. Do search and can find my report. Also Mountnman did a...
Got it with Apex. Perform well into 30's. Simple and effective adjustable suspension. Packs reasonably small
what are the dimensions in the sack?
The stuff sack was on the ground. There was a fallen log near where he set up, and we guess that is where it came from
I got the chance to take my sons' troop down to the gorge. I have been slowly getting back to backpacking thanks to the hammock and you forum members. This was the crew's first time backpacking. A...
Hey all,
I am trying to plan out a trip in May for my son's troop. They just got approved for a crew to Philmont, so want to get them started on training. We live in Cincinnati, and I want to try...
Oops I didn't time travel. It was last week
After seeing Mountnman's post about this place for a hang, decided to go there for my first solo backpacking trip. The last time I did any backpacking was as a teenager. Actually what got me to...
Took my son's troop up to Hocking Hills. We did a 10 mile hike through Cedar Falls and Old Man's Cave. We stayed at the Organized Youth sites, which is a great area for the scouts and also nice to...
Thanks. Will report back.
Mountnman, I was thinking of doing a solo trip through the Germantown area next weekend. Plan get up Friday after work, park at Boomershine Rd. Hike to Oakridge Campsite. Then Saturday hike to Cedar...
I interrupted the hem and did a triple back and forth stitch to reinforce the openings. No problems in the hems. Look at the Knotty end post for I think brinbadi 's idea
If I only counted the cost of the time, I still want to do one. When I counted in the cost of a divorce lawyer after my wife saw the mess, well that's another story ;)
If you go to this spreadsheet you can figure out your real cost in materials and then approximate your cost in your time....
Welcome to the jungle.
Congrats from an old Eagle. Getting into this has really made the old skills come back. It's great to delve more into camping that Scouts started you on.
Funny the cotton webbing belt with D rings is all the rage now. I actually made some out of nylon webbing for myself and my boys for lightweight belts. Count the grams no?
I'm in. Thanks
The video makes doing an attached bugnet seem much more attainable. Thanks.
It's also because what actually provides the warmth is the loft height. Overstuff helps with the down shifting and compressing some, my understanding, but the baffle height is actually the limiting...
Rob and Jenn,
Thanks for the help. Love your pics Rob.
Where do you get your Apex?
Hheart, if you're rehabbing from a stroke and thinking of stuffing down, you are no chicken, whether you buy a blank not.
Thanks everyone for the help. Would list all the helpful ones, but that...
I was ordering down for a quilt. I hit send before changing from 6 bags to 7. Realized it a day later. Called and Marty added that to my order, got to avoid doubling up the shipping. Thanks WL.
Looks great. The baffle stitching reminds me of the seams on bags of rice.
Where did you get the duck down?
For a gathered end, the sleeping bag kept falling off the other side
You should spend $50 to DIY, then make such a mess that she tells you to just buy everything.
Not that I'd know from experience.
Lucky. My wife thinks camping is staying in a Best Western.
Awesome post.
Welcome from Cincy. . I am in the same situation, former Eagle, son in scout, can't stand sleeping on ground. Thus came the hammock. Great info here.
After much research, worked out my TQ. Was planning a 50x72" 40* with 1.5" baffles. Well first mistake was not reading the width of the 1.1 seconds I bought, which was 48". Also not realizing that...
I'm in. Thanks
Hey all,
I am helping my troop plan a trip to Hocking Hills for October. We have reservation in the youth primitive site. Wondering best hiking from there, also other activities can do with them....
+1 on that.
Looks nice. How well does it pack up?
You inspire me. Trying to get my skills up enough to take my boys back country.
After look at the ends, I remelted them and tried to smooth them out more. The abrasions are at the edges, hope they don't affect the hold
My wife homeschools our kids too. Need to let her in on this idea.
It blends into the flowers quite nicely when hunting for garden gnomes. :)

The end where there was more abrasion the sheath does feel harder.
