We've had several "KC area hangs" that you might be interested in. I'm thinking about putting something together for April, and would likely be at the Woodridge Public Use Area on the west side of...
Won't be able to make it out. Really sorry guys. However, I'm hoping to start planning for a Spring Hang for us out there. My grandson really wants to try camping with Poppa...but I'm not ready to...
Let me run it past the wife, and see how work is looking...might be able to make it out, even if for one night.
Sorry I've not been on nor out, Ramen! I'm hoping to get things sorted out here over the next month or two, and setup a late winter/early spring hang for us out in the usual areas! Alternatively,...
I know I'm way late to this conversation, but I wanted to chime in a bit. I like the idea of the HH20 collectors, and might end up picking them up sometime to try out if I get the chance.
My son...
I'm the exact opposite. I prefer my tarp in skins, and my hammock in separate skins or in it's own bag. I like being able to put the tarp up but not unfurl it if the weather is nice...but having it...
Talked with Weasel...we're down as "seriously interested". Really want to come do this, just have to see how things are looking on the employment front for both of us by this time.
My wife pointed out to me that this is scheduled for Easter weekend, so I'm a no-go for this, unfortunately. I'm in process of planning a trip to St Louis sometime in April to see my sister who is...
Actually, I'm planning on being out at Woodridge this upcoming weekend (the one you mention, Caddisman). I'll PM you my cell, we can talk and possibly meet up out there. Might have Weasel out with...
We've got a good crew that tends to hang together here in the KC area...I'm going to PM a bunch of them with the link to your post. Maybe we can get a "hang" scheduled out that way, if you're...
Weasel and I might be able to attend, depending on life events.
So sorry that everything fell through. With both of us sick, and both of us needing to leave early on Sunday to move, we just couldn't make it. Moving while sick was NOT a preferable alternative to...
I really am sorry guys. Weasel and I are both down. We're going to have to drop out on this one and try to rest up and hope it clears up a bit.
Well guys, we're gonna have to see how things are going in the morning. Weasel is down sick with a cold...and both me and momma are getting there now too. Grandson spent a few nights last weekend,...
Forecast just keeps getting prettier. Fri, hi 52/lo 29, Sat 57/38, Sun 61/33, nothing but sun. Weasel and I should hopefully be out there a bit early on Friday, but gotta bail as soon as we're up...
Well...getting to the point where I'd trust the forecast a bit more. Looks significantly changed from previously...hi's in the low 50s, lo near 30 Friday night, near 40 Saturday night. Not going to...
Thought I'd add...this run isn't really a 'backpacking trip'. It's more camping...but we'll likely hike the trail on Saturday. The trail is nice...and I've really been wanting to camp out on the...
There's one circular loop parking lot area when you pull into the park. The George Latham trail is a 4.5 mile loop around the park that has an end at the northern side of the parking lot, and at the...
We'll setup at the trailhead, especially since there are a bunch of us that don't know each other yet. We usually setup in the corner between the two trailhead paths, but pretty much anyone can hang...
Well...come out in the evening if you can, even if it's just to sit around for an hour or so and BS about gear and check out everyone's setups. You can learn a LOT from the folks who usually come...
Accuweather showing a chance for ice first thing Sunday morning...but I typically don't trust the forecast until about Thu. Thanks for checking on the water and gate, Fuhgawee. Was thinking about...
I've got a Swede Stainless Stik that I take camping/backpacking occcasionally that might come along. Otherwise, might have to resort to bringing along my large prescription bottle fishing kit. Used...
I'm going to put it on my calendar as well...I've wanted to come check this particular area out!
Glad we got more folks coming! Been a while since Hoot's been out... Ramenshaman will remain an unequivocal maybe for the foreseeable future...new babies in the family tend to do that! LOL! Doubt...
So...we've got"
LBHiker
MoHiker
Radiohead
Trailboss
Owl
Weasel
Dudorino and Skygzr are both up in the air...no word from Hoot or the rest of the local crew so far.
So...who all is still "in" on this run?
Well, now that's a question with a funny answer.
First hang we had out at Woodridge, I'd let everyone know that we were car camping. Most of us showed up with standard backpacking fare. One...
Figured we'd go with the 24th-25th, so that folks going to the FBH could attend and warm up if they wanted to. :)
That way no conflict with the MO hang either.
LBHiker- This is a good place to...
Cool...I'll definitely be ready to get back out in the woods for this run. This will be a car camping run for sure, so for those that haven't hung in the winter, it's a great time to test out gear...
So...going to suggest either of the following weekends. The 17th-18th, or the 24th-25th. Weasel probably won't be able to attend any of these, since he's both in school and doing his internship on...
Hey guys.
Got a lot of feedback on the recent Indian Caves hang that folks wanted me to get started on a Jan KC area hang. So...dates?
Standard Woodridge run...have a couple of newer folks...
Don't think most of us were that impressed with it, especially for it's price. It's more gimmick than gear...you have to feed it CONSTANTLY, and the charge it puts on most smart phones is so slow as...
Grandson called me and asked what I was doing...asked for me to send him a pic. He'd caught me eating lunch with Dudorino. :)
97573
River barge as it was going past.
97574
Jaker,...
Thank you Tony for suggesting we go back there. Was nice to go back...even if the weather didn't want to cooperate and give us a good view of the river valley.
Cool to see you, Fugahwee, and...
Talk about gradual changes in forecast! I normally don't start trusting forecasts until just a day or two before...and this is a perfect example. According to accuweather right now, we're supposed...
OK...here's the possible attendees at this point:
Owl
Weasel
2 friends of Owl and Weasel
Dudorino
Fugawhee
Jaker
Mohiker
Omaha?
OK...well, it's this weekend! Got a text from Ramenshaman over the past weekend...he can't make it. He and Mommashaman are getting things prepped for their newest little hiker. I'll give Radiohead...
I normally do "KC area hangs" on the western shore of Clinton Lake...just west of Lawrence.
If you can make it out to one of those, we can definitely help you out dialing your gear in.
Sorry to hear you situation, Radiohead! I know what it's like...I lost both my parents and my wife's parents already. We'll keep you in our thoughts and prayers! I shouldn't have an issue making...
Weasel and I should be coming out with a couple of folks who've never 'hung' before. Not sure what they're bringing...might be hammocks, might be tents, might be tarps. I'm really going to need...
Radiohead, when I first met Dudorino out there, the temps were in the mid 50s during the day, and mid 30s at night. That was late Oct/early Nov. We're getting out there a bit later, so it might get...
Right. My point was that I couldn't use them even with my gloves off. They were just too small and fiddly for me to work with. The Fig 9s are usable for me even in the uber cold.
OK...well I'm going to be a voice of dissent. Nothing at all against Dutch, please don't take me wrong. I tried the Tarp Flyz & Dutch Hook on a ridgeline. I changed back to just using Fig 9s...
Or the Omaha area hang? LOL! I don't care what we call it...and since you've become the defacto 'host' of this run, I'm good with it! Totally looking forward to this run.
My first night in this park, I night hiked in. It 'can' be done, but I would caution you to make sure you're using plenty of light to do so. I've not been there in a few years, and they may have...
Exactly. Have that sling come up over the knot once when you're not expecting it...you'll quickly find the advantage to this particular method, which is why I've used it for years. I'm most...
OK, between this and FB, it looks like we've likely got:
Owl
Weasel
Dudorino
Radiohead
Trailboss?
Ramenshaman
Fugawhee
Jaker
Thanks Dude!!! This helps tons. I think that folks that haven't been there are going to be very pleasantly surprised. Not sure yet if Weasel can make it, but we'll figure things out.
It's not that far of a hike in...don't want to oversell it. :) But as I said...the view where we were at was pretty awesome. We were at the top of the cliffs, looking out eastward. Couldn't see...
Same here. I've tried it both ways, and it feels to me like the UQ doesn't hang as snugly when I use the tie outs as it does when I do not.
During the warmer weather, I prefer using the tie outs...
