I was taught the same as cmc4free with regards to a bend vs. a hitch (during my adult Scouting years fwiw). So for its hammocking application, becket hitch would be correct.

This.
I too am the proud owner of some "aesthetically interesting" gear, but it allows me to hang between trees and that's all that matters!
I don't see any tarps. At least not any pre-made "Appalachian Hammock" branded tarps. Am I missing (or misunderstanding) something? Thanks a bunch!
That's interesting. The advice I got was "no smaller than your thigh".
I guess that makes three of us...
You really don't want to be anywhere near a lightning strike:
https://www.newsweek.com/electrocuted-cows-row-1459229
Lightning tends to cast a pretty wide net. Watch how the metal roof (to the...
That's very nice, but did you have to put all us DIYers to shame so thoroughly?!?
Lots of pics when you're finished please!
Great links leiavoia! Thanks for sharing.
Yes. Advise your seamstress to use a "denim" needle, and make sure to use a heavy thread (polyester upholstery thread is a good choice)
Have a look at this video by our very own Jellyfish. ...
I used 3/8 grosgrain on my first tarp (sewn on) and immediately regretted it. It just looked... so small! However, I've been using it for about 2 years and it has held up great! It hasn't been...
No shame in hanging off a Jeep! (it was a Jeep, right?)
It sure beats sleeping on the ground. :)
Not true. (you're just not looking hard enough!)
Ripstop by the Roll
Dutch
Strapworks
You can find them on Amazon. They're a little more expensive then Costco sells them for, but it's the same product.
I've found GE Silicone II in small tubes (think toothpaste) at both Home Depot and Wally World. No caulk gun required and you get about half the amount of the regular tubes.
If you can find some matching nylon fabric (matching color), you can cut a patch and glue it over the tear using some 100% silicone caulk. It helps to thin the silicone with some mineral spirits...
All together. I've found that hanging a hammock with missing/forgotten straps is an almost insurmountable obstacle.
That's some good dadding right there!!
Out of curiosity, can someone explain what the purpose of a tracer is? And why a visible vs. non-visible tracer?
Samson Rope (maker of Amsteel) has an entire corner of their website devoted to splicing.
At 9.3¢ per foot that's better than cheap(ish), that's a steal!!
Also know as a bath pouf.
If you're really intent on going "colorful", try Ripstop by the Roll's OutdoorINK line. There's enough variety over there to satisfy just about every interest.
I immediately wondered why someone would want to drive large hex head wood screws into their snake skins or tarp!! ;-)
I've always said straight stitches are overrated. All those imperfections add character! And your trip sounds like it will be awesome. Best of luck! Say Hi to my daughter Kate, she'll be the...
I hate bugs more than I love a netless hang. So I use a bug net (fronkey style) when there are bugs. And I think it's completely worth it! Other's may have a different opinion, but you need to do...
If I can get homebrewed ham radio gear on a plane, you can get hammocks on. The only thing they might question is the hardware. 'Biners they've probably seen before; dutch hooks, wasps, fleas,...
There is Derek Hansen's HUG, which is still a bug net, but a minimalist one.
And I'm a big fan of chemicals (Permethrin, DEET, Picaridin, etc.) In my experience, DEET just works. Every time. I...
Found their site here.
And on Amazon here.
I don't see why you couldn't try them out. They're inexpensive enough if they don't work out, and the edges don't actually look sharp (in the examples...
Check out this blog post over at RSBTR. Something like their bonded reinforcing patch might be just the thing you need for repairing the tear.
As for sewing on a new tie-out, do you have a...
Does "the blue one" count as a name? If so, then yes I do! ;-)
My 5 year old is currently TERRIFIED of hammocks!! Can't get him anywhere near one. (he's also terrified of bugs, and loud public toilets  )
What's your secret?
I really liked those aluminum toggles Redoleary linked to, but they are a bit overkill for our needs. A scaled down version would be awesome!
Try this: In Google's search box type "site:hammockforums.net grizz beaks"
This will use the power of google's search engine but limit it's focus to the Hammock Forums website.
Yes, that will work. You can also add a diagonal for a 5th hammock. Your "square" might need to become a diamond/parallelogram to make that work, but as long as your tripods can carry the weight...
I bet sidneyhornblower was pointing out the instructions you find by following his link. It leads to this PDF document.
You need to find tarp material with a high UPF rating. My cursory search turned up lots of good info for clothing (here and here for example) but not for tarps.
If you contact RBTR or Dutch, they...
If you're determined to pursue the DIY bags, you might order a fabric sample from RBTR. For $3 you get 4 different fabric samples to help you decide. That's pretty cheap insurance against yards and...
If you google "burn test", you get lots of results. This PDF doc included aramid fibers (which is what Kevlar is classified as).
If you click on the picture, the tripod is labeled BlueSky Mast. Looks like they cater to the military.
This...
And once you've actually fallen from that "sitting height" you'll realize that even THAT is too far to fall! :scared:
Yep! Exhibit #1:

Derek Hansen over at the Ultimate Hang demonstrated this using a couple of scales. In the video he promises more tests, but that was almost 6 years ago and I haven't seen any follow up. Maybe I'm...
Just one. I'm not much of a picture taker but I managed to capture it when I set up my first DIY hammock for a trial run.
I made my own ENO style attached stuff sack and added it to my hammock. Easy and convenient.
I mis-threaded one of my cinch buckles my second time out. It held well enough when I gave it a firm tug, but let loose as soon as my full weight was applied. Like most, I suffered a bruised pride,...
Hmmm... I thought GNP was for Glacier National Park.
I'm 5'4" and have been perfectly comfortable in 10' and 11' hammocks. Never tried anything shorter. My 10 footer is ~60" wide and my 11 footer is 72" wide. I don't side-sleep in a hammock.
I tried spraying my hammock the first time I treated it. Most of the permethrin was carried away on the wind. Now I soak! :-)
I made a bottom entry bug net from a kit by RSBTR. I'm more than happy with it and consider a zipper to be a potential point of failure rather than a "feature".
You get enough material in the kit...
And I always thought a flat tarp was the one that had lost all it's fizz...
