I'd suggest bringing a tent. Lots of backcountry campsites are close enough to treeline that the trees are spindly. And some parks staff can be picky that your hammock has to be hanging above a tent...
Looks like a great trip. Nice to find a circuit route in the Rockies. Any more trips planned this summer?
Next time you'll have to show off some of your gear for us gear junkies. Looks like you...
The way you described him, I was picturing Dewey as some guy running around and barking. Much different picture now that TrailSlug mentioned that Dewey is your dog. :)
As (bad) luck would have it, I've been waiting for some minor foot surgery for over a year and just got the call to come in. Just had the surgery today and my hiking will be delayed until next...
If you're going to go with the dyneema/polypro straps then you might as well do a spider or cinch bugs rather than a whoopie sling. Less fiddle factor and everything is pretty easy to set up, even if...
One thing that I really like about the kevlar straps is how compact they are compared with rolling up polyester straps. How do the dyneema straps compare for bulkiness?
Very helpful video! Thanks for posting it.
Do you mind sharing your parts list? It would be good to know what you used.
In addition, what are the dimensions of the tarp? Did you use a template...
It doesn't look like you hung your hammock over a tent pad. Sometimes the parks folks are picky about that. No problems for you?
Definitely take some photos and do a short write-up on how suitable the campsites are for hammocks. I'm hoping to introduce the kids to hiking this summer and Jacques Lake is one of two sites that I...
I hear ya! I just picked up a 20* EE Revelation this spring and haven't had a chance to get out with it yet. Probably have a short hike with Firesong this Saturday but would love to get in some more...
I've used something similar to what's been described but without any prussics or soft shackles. dejoha made a great diagram of it.

Rather than using a carabiner, I steal a tip from dejoha and use a stick across my continuous loop. http://theultimatehang.com/2013/07/simple-hammock-suspension-options-using-a-continuous-loop/

Hey Shug - it doesn't look like your DIY BlackCrow has proper doors built into it. Maybe more like "just in case" doors?
I've been thinking of building an 11' tarp with "just in case" doors on...
Yeah, I think that's the key here. D-rings give you more flexibility with your choices.
I hear what you're saying about forgetting the straps. However, what do you do if it rains and your straps are wet?
haha...I hear ya. It's definitely a lot of time. I've spent the last couple of years reducing my pack weight so it seems crazy to just use it for car camping or overnight hikes.
On top of that,...
If anyone in the Edmonton area is interested in a multi-day Jasper backpacking trip, I'm organizing one.

I'm looking to hike the North Boundary Trail in Jasper at some point this summer. Was thinking I'd do it solo but company is more than welcome. I've done 3-4 day trips in Jasper before but this would...
What a great trip! I took my 9-year old out a few times last year. Learned the hard way that he likes to roll around when he sleeps...a hammock might not be the right choice for him. But I did learn...
c0wb0y_hubs - just came across this post from 3 years ago. I like your idea of leaving on the material that should be removed from the corners. Have you found that these smaller doors still provide...
Welcome! I've been trying to talk James into hiking the Boreal Trail this summer. Good to know there's another Saskatchewan that I can nag. :)
James is fantastic to deal with. I've been really happy with both his work and his customer service.
Sounds great! I've got a sit on top kayak and have been wanting to do Lakeland Provincial Park's canoe circuit. Sounds perfect!
Sounds like a great group hang! Hope you get some folks out for it. I'm a solid 3-season camper so I won't be there but look forward to seeing some pics!
Yep! Just not too active during winter.
hutzelbein,
Nice idea for extending your ridgeline. I like the 'V' shape as well but sometimes I need the full length of my ridgeline. I use Fleaz (rather than Stingerz like you do) and was going...
Looks great James! We'll have to plan another (but longer) trip this spring. I'll order some more stuff from you and have you deliver it personally. :)
Dutch - is it possible to customize the Tadpole tarp through you the same way I would on the Wilderness Logics site? I'm just looking for some extra tieouts on each side. Is that possible to do you...
I like that idea! Never hurts to have a couple extra stakes.
The whistle pieces are pretty smooth so I'm not worried about fraying. But I do wonder how strong the whistle is around those...
I picked up some cheap aluminum whistles from ebay a couple of months ago but finally had a chance to use them as toggles. They worked great! No slippage and when I checked them afterwards they don't...
There is definitely a thread for Canadian vendors. However, there isn't much useful info in there other than Redden Net & Rope in Richmond - crazy cheap Amsteel!
Firesong is the closest thing...
I would go with an integrated bugnet too. I don't like it for my own stuff but it's been fantastic for my 9yo in his HH Cub Scout hammock. For whatever reason, he tends to roll a lot in the hammock...
Been looking for a light windshirt and this would be a great fit for me. But I'm in Canada - shipping would probably be just as much as the jacket! :(
Thanks for asking that. I never knew what it stood for either.
It's definitely worthwhile to contact Firesong. I just went backpacking with him a couple of weeks ago and it sounds like he's going to start making tarps. Not sure how far he's gone with that.

hmmm...I seem to remember Dutch also saying that when Ti Cinch Buckles were sold out (link) and when spools of Zing-it were unavailable (link). Starting to think this might be his default excuse? :)
I stayed in Jasper National Park last night with 2 hammocks in our site. Also saw somebody else in the campground with a hammock set up. Didn't have any problems at all. However, this is technically...
I've had good success with a loop turner that I bought off of ebay. http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Latch-Hook-Eye-Loop-Turner-for-Button-Loops-Frog-Closures-String-Belts-/330947314270
$4 and free...
haha...hasn't bothered me yet. Actually, the only time that I notice any noise from it is when I'm digging around in it. But If I'm not using it then it's silent. Maybe it would make more noise if it...
I attach a long-ish dogbone to the ridgeline and then larkshead a plastic grocery bag to it. The bag hangs just off the outside of the hammock. It's about as far from fancy as you can get but it...
SnrMoment - love the snap on the ends. And I never knew why someone would get the extra tie out points along the bottom edge. Makes sense now. I really don't want to get a tent with doors because 90%...
I started with a Hennessy Explorer Deluxe for most of the same reasons as you. it was available here (MEC sells them!) and seemed like a great all-in-one solution. However, as I've gotten more...
I'd love to take credit for that video but it's not mine. Just one that I learned from.
For sourcing Amsteel in Canada, the short answer is that I don't - it's too expensive up here. I usually get...
I'm not sure if I full understand what you're describing, but I would think that doubling back would reduce the strength of the amsteel. Keep in mind that the strength comes from the constrictor...
Other than a HH Explorer Deluxe, the SLD Streamliner DL is the only hammock that I've owned. I bought it mainly for the catenary cuts on the sides. I didn't realize that it was harder to get a...
Thanks Brian. So how long until you start stocking silpoly tarps? :)
So does that mean that silpoly wouldn't need shockcord on the tieouts?
Hey guys - first time back on the forums for a few months. Kinda neglected a few emails as well so I apologize to any of you that tried to contact me since the summer.
I definitely liked Fort...
Yeah, what he said. :)
