I'll take it. PM inbound
I've been eyeing the Elephant Trunk to continuous loop set up. I really like the looks of it.
Yeah, the cat cuts are what makes the bridge hammock what it is. The design really cannot lose the narrow middle.
Howdy from currently flooded Central NY!
Just bought my wife a silnylon tarp from them, to shed some weight from her Hennessy. Very nice work and it included the ridgeline, stakes and tie outs
Dutch-y goodness, why yes please.
My coldest hang was in a HH (-17F) and the only issue I ever had was untying the HH rope suspension. Tight, icy rope plus cold fingers equals difficult break down. Add whoopies or straps and that...
Welcome from Central NY!
I'm down to a "maybe". The flu hit me hard today, but I'm hoping to get over it and make it anyway.
I'm aiming to be there around 1pm, maybe a little later if I get too distracted by the stop I plan at Wegmans to pick up some food.
Welcome from CNY to the North! Hope to meet you at a hang in the future.
I'm really looking forward to the trip. My job and training schedule made it impossible for me to get away for any camping this year.
Marking my calendar for January 11-13.
I can make any of the dates work, as long as the decision is made soon. I need to put in for the time off from work as soon as possible to ensure coverage so I can take off.
I know the spot. I hope we can make this happen.
At the FLNF, there is a large area near the Potomac parking area across from Chicken Coop Road. We had 6 hammocks there for a ZS trip a couple of years ago, and that was with plenty of spare trees.
I would be in for a NY Winter hang. The Finger Lakes would be my first choice due to driving distance.
My son uses a DD 3mx3m with his Skeeter Beater hammock which has a similar netting set up to your DD. We always run the shock cords to the tie outs on the tarp rather than to the tree.

I go with the UQ alone and lay directly on the hammock until about 0 Fahrenheit or so and then I add a pad (-14F is my personal record)

Given that you are in Horseheads, how about either the Sugar Hill State Forest or the Finger Lakes National Forest.
I took my son (3.5 at the time) on his first overnight hike on the Finger Lakes...
I use both systems. Specifically, I use the CRL on my larger, heavier rectangular or square tarps (ie the GG 12X12, and DD 3mX3m), and the two part set up with the smaller, lighter tarps (ie HH sil...
Zero bites here in the dbl layer.
Just ordered one. Multi-sham or not, it's a great deal for a camo tarp, and I've been looking for something this size for car camping.
I use an UberLite self inflating torso pad under my legs, outside the TQ. It also acts as the frame pad for my G4 back pack.

I just don't see how a hammock and tarp is arguably less a "psychological deterrent" to the bear than some backpacking tent?
I think the tent is just a safety blanket for the fearful.
-Mike
I wonder if a layer of fleece above or between the IX would give enough loft to keep it working in the double layer?
I use the TTs with the Crow's Nest by running the lines through the mini-biners of the TTs. I removed the shock cord on the TT entirely, and hooked the biners through the loops with the cord locks. ...
I go stealthy mostly because I do not want to be bothered by nosy hikers, and secondarily because there are definitely black hats out there who would walk away with any gear they find laying around....
Probably 3/4 of my trips are solo. I tend to do planned trips with a group, but the last minute trips that I just run out the door and do because I have the time are the majority of my wilderness...
Howdy from Central NY to Central NY!
I hang every couple of weekends in one of the state forest in the Chenango or Madison counties, mostly the Brookfield Forest System and Stoneypond, but I also...
Once you get that top quilt and under quilt done you will never be able to go back to the MSS in the hammock.
Can't wait to see the finished products.
-Mike
I put zip ties through the channels and then wrapped the whoopies behind the knob formed by the fabric.
I think the simple answer is "yes"
The UQ is more comfortable, and given the morning chill of condensation with a pad, they are definitely worth the weight penalty even for only a moderate gain in...
I use wool for my sleep wear in cool weather, but for stupidly cold (as in -17F on that finger of land sticking out into Polliwog Pond in the Northern Adirondacks with ZS:drool:) I'm going with the...
Not quite WNY (more CNY), but a few of us are camping at the Finger Lakes National Forest this weekend (the 13th-16th). If you are able come on over, and hang out.
Coordinates=...
Add a block and tackle system at the apex of the hammock and you could bear bag yourself:lol:
I've been coming at this idea from a few different angles, and just never get around to doing it. I've got a few packable stoves at this point and two shelters (a tarp tipi, and a modified 'Appy...
My first UQ was made out of an old down sleeping bag. The down was low quality and had a lot of feather content (I'd guess it was about 450-500 fill power). I still have it in the gear room as a...
Jamie, this video shows both types of suspension for WB hammocks. Hope it is some help.
-Mike
PS- Which hammock are you bringing to the trip? It would be cool to compare the Black Bird to the...
Totally love at first sight!
I was tarp camping on the ground for years before I got into the hammock and had grown accustomed to a short sleep and waking up sore. I figured it was just the price...
Wow, that thing is truly a suspended solo tent.
I would really love to hear a comfort and flatness report from an experienced hammocker.
PS- anyone else notice the 550 cord being used for the...
I've used the GI poncho as a beak on the Hennessy Hex, and as a ground tarp, but never tried to sleep under one as a hammock tarp. I might have to give it a try with my GT.
I stick with wild hangs in the state forests (and the national forest), and stay clear of the state parks, and campsites.
As long as you are a couple hundred feet off of the trail you won't have any...
I don't know about your particular disaster relief organization, but I work for the Red Cross, and as much as I love my hammock, knowing the realities of shelters and tent cities, I would not bring...
My tarp goes into the mesh pocket on the back of my G4, and the hammock goes into a double end stuff sack and is the top item in the interior of the pack (this week at least).
I added stitches to keep my DCs on the webbing.
The issue that led me to the Dutch Clips from 'biners was the way that the 'biners compress the webbing unevenly down into the narrow ends of the...
I hike with my family a couple times a week, and I try to get in an overnight (either solo or with friends) at least once a month. I'm lucky enough to live out in the sticks a 1/4 mile from the...
I've got the HH Explore Deluxe and the WB Black Bird in 1.7Dbl, and comfort wise I would say there is a (subjective) 10-15% comfort improvement in the BB over the Exp Dlx. The only real reason I...
If I'm staying put for a basecamp style trip, I will set up a tripod off the ground and under my tarp with the JRB gear hammock/pack cover over it. This allows easy access to the gear during the...
