I made a amsteel tie out for our dog(just for backpacking). He likes to chew and the amsteel works great at a light weight! If it weren't for hammocks I wouldnt know about amsteel!

Some of you have replied with some simple underquilt solutions so I thought I would post what I sent to BigBogg regarding my idea for this.
Bigbogg
Yeah! no problem! They are nothing really...
But $25 with whoopies is pretty good! my guys arent ready for whoopies...yet! Be a good upgrade at some point!
Thank you all for the kind words! My scoutmasters growing up gave alot, and I didn't realize how much until later in life. I just want to give some back. Also, anyone who works with scouts knows...
Yeah, I can probably work up something wih a few pictures to get a little better idea and something to pass along. The biggest thing is that it takes some time for someone to hem the edges and fix...
I have been using this hammock camping merit badge (unofficial) to get my scouts interested. They all like my setup but unless you get them something to put their hands on and use they seem to loose...
I have been making these hammock/tarp kits for our scouts to get them into hammock camping. Cheap is the name of the game with most scouts/parents. It does take me a little work (ok, a good bit of...
I dont know if its so much runs(as in when it rains) as the color rubs off some on your hands when working with it. I have only used the original grey and yellow. The gray does rub off some, but...
Man, that is winter time her in MS! :D
I have a roughly(its a little less on both) 10X12 DIY sil tarp. I originally went that large because we were going to be hanging two hammocks under it...
I had to keep from laughing out loud at work! Thanks and Welcome!
My wife goes with me almost every time. Some times have worked better than others hanging two hammocks under one tarp! 3 trees in a triangle works good in that you arent touching(dont disturb each...
Also, I was going to comment that a 3/4 length underquilt can be just as warm as a full length with the proper additional insulation under your feet. I know Shug only uses a 1/2 to 3/4 length UQ and...
On the quilt I built, I just heat sealed the edges of the nylon(I sew one line of stitching to hold the nylon together) then put the grosgrain on.
That's Awewome!!:)
I did some more hose testing (read: full blast at 6") on the ridgeline and found that water was coming through and then running down and dripping in the center. I mixed up a batch of 3:1 ratio...
In February of this year I made a 10X12 Camo tarp from DIY gear supply camo 1.1 oz ripstop and then sil'd it myself using about a 4:1 ratio. I have used it quite a few times, and through some rains...
I made my down winter UQ with grosgrain (from Scott! Thanks!)and I made a summer quilt (fleece sewed to 1.1 oz shell) and just used the nylon as the channel. I would definitely use the grosgrain on...
All that I have bought from there (which is a good bit!) has been calendared. If it is calendared it is a little bit shiney on one side.
I have one of the Hammock Bliss No-Seeum-No More Cacoons and they are very well made and $35, just a little on the heavy side (17 oz). I only say used to use because I made my own somewhat copying...
There is alot of good information in this thread. I and others have posted lightweight versions of different fans. Enjoy! :)

I kind of agree that the PVC would make me a little nervous. I think the reason they are holding so well is the dowel inserts are supporting alot of the weight. I think if i was to make one i would...
Welcome to the forum! As far as the weight of the ripstop, its a little harder now that the hammock is made, but weigh some known size of the ripstop and divide that weight by the number of sq yds...
HA! Not this time ;) I didnt figure I was the only one who thought this, and definitely not the first! Glad to hear its in the works! Thanks! BTW, I appreciate all ya'll do to make this a better...
I dont know if this has ever been suggested or if anyone else has the same thoughts. But it would be nice to me to have the 'Hangouts, Campouts, and Trip Planning' forum have subforums under it that...
I much prefer a full length underquilt! It is less hassle (no other footpad etc) and to me its more comfortable! more comfortable in that I hate having the shockcord run up over my feet. I made...
I second this comotion! I like to be able to tuck the edges under my shoulders a good bit and if it was much narrower than my bag I couldn't do that!
Here is a thread that discusses alot about hammock fans.

and below are some pictures of the one I use! Ths fan uses a D-cell battery...
Happy Hammock Day and Happy bday to TFC Rick and Fronkey's gf!!!
I agree! Or some of her favorite candy whatever it may be. My wife also likes her coffee! I always try to make her as comfortable as I can (which isn't too hard:)) I learned pretty quickly that...

Except that it makes a good bass guitar string when it's tight! :D
I just got through with summer camp with my scouts and slept in my hammock every night. South MS with lows in the mid to low 70s. I use no bottom insulation and a sheet on top, with my fan hanging...
The tarp looks awesome!!! It sounded like you were having a little trouble with the seam sealing not working right? If I am not mistaken, you need to use a silicone seam sealer on sil as the...
I agree. I used 1.5" on the sides and 1" on the ends of mine, but to do it again i woud probably just use 1.5" all the way around. It was easier to work with and provides a little more channel room.
It looks like most of the cottage tarp makers use reinforced patches, but this seems to make the most sense, and would actually spread the load in the right places...I will definitely keep this in...
I made one for more of a summer underquilt (down to 50 or so) with a nylon shell and it seems to work pretty good! stuffs down to about the size of a 2 litre coke bottle.

Welcome from Raymond, MS! I know your part of MS pretty well too.
I am an ASM in my local troop. I have the Scoutmaster about converted and many of the boys are interested as I have just introduced them to the 'Unofficial Hammock Camping Merit Badge'!
The first (and only) tarp I have made I did sew multiple layers together, but I made mine out of regular 1.1 oz and then used DIY sil on it so the holes from those mistakes didn't matter. I think...
I use a fan just like the one T-Back cut to make lighter (like the one in his original post). I had trouble with the blades hitting my bug netting as the net hangs directly on my ridgeline. I...
I got this box in the mail yesterday and there were little pieces of fluffy down stuck to the edges of the tape on the outside! It gave me a little smile, and thought some of you might understand!:D...
And it is only about 2.5 oz of nylon. That is 1.1 oz/sq yd nylon.
Scooterdogma was right on and that everything (leaves, sticks, etc) sticks to fleece and would help protect from that, but other than those things, just a piece of fleece would work!
Nice....maybe a little much if you are backpacking, but guess that depends on how hot it is! :)
On page 13 of the link below is the fan I use. Kind of taken from T-Back's design and this thread has alot of different types and discussion. One mod i have made to mine since these pics is added...
I used the handful-weigh-stuff with hand method. I was inside my old tent, but inside the tent down was everywhere!! I put a piece of no-seeum between the tip and hose of my vaccum and rescued it...
No-seeum sews to itself pretty easy. I would just sew a patch of no-seeum on and let it go! I havent patched any holes but have sewn a good bit of no-seeum. And for the rips along the zipper you...
+1 Great prices, great stuff, fast shipping! That sounded like a ebay feedback, but you get what I am saying! :D I have bought a good bit from Scott and averything has been great!
I sleep very warm and live in south MS, but I still dont think I ever leave my underquilt at home! That being said, I have slept many nights and will sleep many more without using my underquilt, but...
I also used closer to 1 part silicone to 4 parts mineral spirits. You want it thin enough to soak through good, but not so thin that it doesnt leave enough silicone in the fabric.
I started with nylon 48 X 67 and the fleece was 46 X 65.
