I am not in the SE, but some may call me an 'overlander'. Actually, my fondness of vehicle based exploration travel is what brought me to hammocks.
The more remote my trips became that harder it...
On the Kansas side, if I am looking for a quick getaway, I stop by a state fishing lake and set up for the night.
Missouri has many more opportunities but I have not yet taken advantage of them.
You will have a few hundred miles in eastern CO and western KS that will pose a hanging problem if you don't get to certain public campgrounds by the end of the day.
That route isn't the TAT....
Thank you for sharing. The trip looks like it was perfect (less the ground dwelling shelter) :)
What did you use for a navigational aid through the archipelago?
Welcome from the edge of the Flint Hills :) I too rely on my Jeep or Land Cruiser to take me away from it all to hang.
Welcome George! Your hometown put on a good firework display this past weekend :)
Welcome, neighbor!
Before you get to BV, stop by Salida Mountain Sports in Salida and ask the crew there about hanging opportunities at North Cottonwood Creek. Although I only know of a few hangers there, but they all...
Welcome from a stones throw away to the north.
I don't know....seems like it should be pitched closer to the ground
Wow, that night would have been a wild ride! The night always brings unpredicted conditions. Needless to say, I haven't slept without a tarp in quite awhile ;)
I really like the dynamic of this group. I read posts for years before joining while doing hammock research, then registered only to see more pictures posted in the discussions and have only recently...
The best cry you'll ever have!
A top cover cannot and will not replace a tarp. The fabric is not waterproof and if it was, rain water would run down the suspension and into the ends of the hammock. You would also combat rain with...
Welcome to the rabbit hole of hammocking  The problem is, everybody prefers something a little different and what works well for one person might not work well for another. If you read the...
I haven't spent much time around Carbondale, but I spent a lot of time south of Aspen towards Taylor Park when I lived in Vail. If you are comfortable not staying in a developed campground, the...
Dang you  Thanks for the link.
Those things are super cool. Thanks for sharing! Please report back on the ornaments. I've been on the hunt for something that can locate guy lines in the...
No moonlight on my trusty Foursevens. I don't recall the model of the light since I picked it up 9 years ago. It has one configuration L-M-H-Strobe-SOS and uses two AA batteries that I replace...
I love my Foursevens light and was practically heart broken when they sold out to Prometheus. It also looks like I missed out on the Mini MK II as Prometheus is liquidating stock :( *just ordered the...
About a month ago I had a car camp expedition planned in which my wife decided to tag along at the last minute. This would be her debut to hammock camping so I let her have my tried and true tarp...
Sounds like the perfect weekend!
I like the Nite Ize Moonlit. The light produced is wide, soft and not blinding. The built in carabineer is perfect for the ridgeline and the light is directional so you can eliminate glare.

It is nice to be in the air and off the ground like an animal :shades:
After spending my first week sleeping in a hammock, I didn't want to sleep in my bed once I got home.
We have about 350 navigable (public) river miles through Kansas and many State Fishing Lakes to paddle on. It's not nearly as impressive as the waters east coast folks have, but it's plenty to keep...
Welcome to the trees. You will appreciate not sleeping on the ground like a wild animal. Might need to find a cheap hammock to satisfy that hanging itch before the DH shows up.
Paddling and...
Welcome from Kansas.
I do not think your hanging experiment will disappoint! :shades:
My first hammock was an ENO Singlenest, a freebie from a gear store a family member works at. In addition to getting the hammock, I purchased a bugnet, pillow, suspension straps, tarp and insulation...
If you are car camping or have the means to carry a lot of weight/bulk, buy a moderately thick foam mattress topper and cut it to fit inside your hammock. It will keep the cold at bay under your...
It's an interesting concept that sounds good in theory. I worry about the practicality of an all in one system out in the field. I'd love to try it out, but the initial investment is too steep for me...
I cannot comment on the DIY nature of tarps, but as a user I would highly recommend a tarp with doors. Very versatile for any condition you may encounter.
I'll take the Handy Hammock Stand
The US Forest Service has improved the usability of their mapping system two-fold over the past few years. While the map won't show state forest lands, you can quickly find trails in the National...
Welcome! I sympathize with your condition. My wife calls me crazy... but I always feel like I have made the best possible choice. Until something new comes out three days later:scared:
Welcome. Nice to see another 'local' hanger here.
Greetings from Junction City.
I think we all remember our first overnight hang. Mine was in an ENO singlenest using a thick Coleman sleeping bag and a fleece blanket for warmth. I also used a piece of a 2" or 3" thick foam...
I was able to locate the stand at a neighboring Walmart store, but I did not purchase it. The 'portable' nature of the stand seems like a stretch since it only packs down to roughly 6"x7"x65"...
Well I struck out at my local monopoly store. I inquired with an employee about the stand...She tried to order the it to the store for me but was unable to locate it in their...
As a newbie myself, I found it easiest to read 'Left lay' or 'Right lay' as, "If laying in the hammock on your back, which side of center are your feet?" This is how warbonnet and dream hammock...
Thanks for sharing this. I was in the local Walmart last week perusing the outdoor gear section and did not notice this stand. I will have to swing by after this evening to investigate. We could sure...
That trip sounds like a great time. Consider me jealous!
I used a single ENO setup (single nest, guardian, atlas strap, ember, spark, housefly) for several years before going the cottage route and was pleased with how it slept, even with me being 6'3"/210....
Payment for #2 sent.
I'll take #2 if it remains available as a set.
Welcome! While I have mixed radio with my vehicles and kayak, I have not yet mixed the radio and hammock.....but you having me thinking :thumbup1:
73's, KE0EBF
The sounds like a solid plan :shades:
My late summer/early fall is pretty wide open with exception of a 2-week trip to Colorado/Utah the first of October.
I'd love to tag along. Maybe we could make it a HF trip.
I am looking at doing an overnight Kansas River trip this year in a kayak. The Arkansas River would also be an option and has come highly recommended (at least as a day trip) by folks I know in...
Thanks! Although I will admit, I've been hammock camping for 4 years and should have anticipated the weather better.
Than you. I've spent many nights hanging between lodge pole pine and aspen in...
The mountain scene DD T-shirt is one my all time favorites. It is soft, durable and the green color is great. I was also blown away how quick my order arrived :thumbup1:
