In all the years I have been "hanging" around this site, I have to say this is one of the few threads that really need to be capped off. Nothing more can be said to change opinions and all in all it...
I am wondering about abrasion at the hook for the slings. Looks like a pretty sharp shoulder. Any thoughts?
I put one biner about 6 inches down from the foot end. It works just fine.
Great job Shug. I could see these vids (Slogging on Manitou in Finland, Minnesota) easily being put on the Discovery channel, they are that good. Again, if you are ever near Raleigh, give me a...
I got that but I still don't quite understand how they work. A picture of them in use would be great.
What are they and how do you use them? Please tell me they are not a man thong!!!!
I think you are right and Amsteel is pretty slippery stuff as well.
Rotary cutters are nice but I use a soldering gun with its tip forged into a disk shape. Notice I said gun and not iron. I use cardboard for a "cutting board" and the gun keeps any raveling from...
Don't give up on the hammock idea. It really is the most comfortable way to camp. If you find all this confusing just check out Shug's videos and things should become clearer. The input you...
Just finished watching the Superior Trail vids. Thanks Shug, really a nice way to finish a long hard week. Keep it up!
Nice looking setup. Looks like you are off to a good start. I use a CCF pad and an underquilt when it gets cool out but be aware that the pad can cause you to sweat even though the temps might...
I will be 59 shortly and if it wasn't for the hammock, I would not be camping.
Done and thanks to all for all the good info.
Shug has just completed a hammock camping how to series of nine or ten short videos. You can find them here or just go to Youtube and look up Shug Emery. His videos are very entertaining and packed...
I actually talked the wife into hanging in the back yard tonight. First time for a double under the same tarp so it should be interesting. Gotta love those whoopie slings and marlin spike hitches. ...
We better be careful lest we get the mathaletes started but I can picture what you are saying.
OK OK OK. So I tried it and it is really is a great way to get your tarp centered or positioned to give you the best coverage with respect to wind direction. I used a biner on one end of the...
Good point.
I appreciate the reference but it really didn't answer my question. I think Shug had some reference to this in one of his videos (excellent and entertaining as always). My question is why would I...
I currently use a line at each end of my tarp with figure 9s. I have seen some using a ridgeline over the tarp with the tarp suspended by prussiks (sp). Is there any advantage to this?
Only problem with any latex tubing is it will degrade pretty quickly with prolonged exposure to UV.
OhOh, This otta be good!!!
I was wondering the same thing. I suppose you could use the warmth from bare hands to thaw them. Second test of the new slings went fine last night and now my son wants me to install a set on his...
I use and old Japanese Kenmore that I found used at a sewing machine store for $49. It is all metal and weighs a ton. Did a cleanup and lube and it has worked flawlessly. You really don't need...
My son and I stayed at Morrow Mountain State Park for an overnighter and it was very nice. You are not terribly far from Grayson Highlands SP in Virginia. You can pick up the AT from there and find...
Anybody seen one of these? I didn't know these guys were in the game.

You could try the above to get one bar tack and then try a double X box. That should be plenty to hold a hammock. It has worked for me for two years now anyway.
I just replaced the stock suspension on my HH and it was very easy. Remove the shrouds from both ends of the hammock by clipping the wire ties that hold them. Place both ends of the hammock side by...
Thanks for the info. Well, I went ahead and done it!!! Whoopie slings are really cool. A big thanks to Grizz with his primer on hammock suspensions. He is an outstanding instructor and a true asset...
OK, you guys have my interest with all this whoopie sling stuff and like Shug says, it's too cool a name not to use it. I am going to replace the HH suspension lines with six foot whoopie slings. I...
Feel free to pull stuff from my gallery.
The KAQ is NOT a one size fits all. I have built two of them and use the on my HHs. They are designed specifically for the HH and the asymmetric shape allows them to fit exactly. Both my wife and I...
Have to just left it outside for an extended period to see if it will air out?
The KAQ is asym which accommodates the location of the tie outs on a HH. The V notches or darts, as they are called, helps to create the bathtub shape. I made two of them and they work great. Mine...
UNBELIEVABLE!!!!! Really glad you guys made it back safe. I hope many ground dwellers get a chance to see this.
I have the ENO bugnet and it seals pretty tight although a small spider could probably make it in. I dropped my bike in the driveway cause there was a spider on one of the grips. He jumped off the...
Thanks Shug. We can count on you to put a little joy into the day. I am curious as to how much wooded area is in back of your place. Looks like quite a bit. Iafte, I worked with a guy at Nortel...
Thanks for y'alls input. Did I actually say y'alls?
Hi NCPatrick. I hope your Kenmore is still running fine for you. This mod will go on three hammocks, mine, my wife's and my son's. I have done two KA quilts and two Black Cat tarps, all with very...
I am thinking about putting zippers on my HH but I have a couple of questions. Is any disassembly required or do you simply cut the bugnet? Is there any special method of sewing a zipper to the bug...
Gutterman's thread is very popular here. It is polyester and will not rot or degrade in sunlight. Nylon thread is not the way to go for outdoor projects. The thin and slippery materials such as...
Done!!!!!!
You should have nothing to worry about. Just keep an eye on the weather and plan accordingly. You can get some general info on the Grayson Highlands website. I think I have heard this is the most...
My wife and I are headed up to Grayson Highlands this weekend and will setup just north of the park off the AT. Just wondering if anyone else will be up there as well.
There are three in the Raleigh area. Which one is it?
My wife and I are thinking about going but she has some concerns about the weather. She has a 10 degree down bag and I made her a KAQ Potomac with three layers of insulation, mine has two layers. We...
I've made several sets of tensioners from surgical tubing and Theraband tubing. They work great but they deteriorate quickly when exposed to UV.
The tension will be much easier to adjust if the machine you are using has a vertical bobbin.
I think Santa got the message!!!

Happy Holidays to all.
Great job. Sue and I have used ours several times and I am certain you are going to like it.
