I went to the Challenge Sailcloth website to try to find more specs on some of the fabrics listed. The lightest (eg Elite 36) are decribed as PU coated "zero porosity". The heavier ripstops (eg 1.5)...
Seeing the direction of the weave is pretty easy with ripstop.
