In my experience it isn't necessary. I didn't get out of bed to look at it during the storm, but I believe the tail creates a low point for the water to follow and keeps it away from the hammock.

Counselor said one of his tarps would be an 11'x7'. On my thru(-) I used a 10'x6' and found it to be adequate on my hammock in all weather encountered. I figure a little extra length can't hurt, but...
5 grams per side. The UCRs are 4' long, the WSs are a little shorter than that.
So for my SUL hammock I'm working with now it is Nano7 @ 4.91 ounces with homemade Dynaglide USRs at 0.35 ounces,...
Just made a set of Dynaglide WS's and a set of Dynaglide UCRs. I'll watch for the creep.
But these are VERY light. For trying to create a SUL hammock, a 10 gram suspension system is a good step.
