Welcome from up the road in Peoria.
I've been to Sand Ridge State Forest a few times - no water sources, but a decent-sized area for backpacking.
JToon's advice is a good place to start -...
I for one have never clutched a spork in fear of a chipmunk. (This has nothing to do with the fact that I carry a spoon instead of a spork. :D)
Thanks for the laughs. You have an awesome setup.
I personally use a topquilt and underquilt. Like Mountnman said, a TQ is easier to manage and has less risk of catastrophic hammock failure. TQs are also lighter and pack smaller than sleeping bags -...
Welcome from a little west in Illinois.
I got my hammocking start with a Kammok as well, and it's been blur ever since - all the awesome hammocks, cool Dutch bling, and downy goodness. Enjoy!
An alternative to cutting it yourself would be to buy the baffle material pre-cut from Dutch. A little bit less DIY-ish, but if you're making your first UQ, a little "cheat" like this can be helpful....
FYI, I put an order in for a few of the large Bulgarian blankets from KeepShooting.com, but they e-mailed me a few days later saying they were actually out of stock. Maybe HF bought them out? I asked...
I have this tarp, and it is a great piece of gear. I think the same as you about the doors - it is nice to have them when you need them, and the weight penalty is negligible.
Here are the ZPacks...
Welcome from across the border in Illinois.
Welcome from Peoria!
Welcome to the forums from Peoria!
I look forward to reading about your trip. It is relatively close to home, so I may try out some of the trails if you report good things about them.
If you like the idea of DIY at all, I reccommend getting a kit from BIAS. It is a no-sew kit, so you won't have to dig out your sewing machine (aka thread injector, aka cloth welder, depending on who...
Welcome from Peoria! I hope you and your family were able to stay dry - I know some people with six feet of water in their basements.
Yes, the 72 refers to the width. I am a big guy (6'5", 250 lb) so I went with an 11'x6' (one of the two standard sizes at the time).
Length really helps with getting a flat lay - moreso than...
You're right about the inside/outside options - it only applies to double layered hammocks.
I use a DangerBird 72 single layer. Yes, it is heavier than some hammocks, but make sure you are comparing apples to apples. The integrated bug net/top cover saves the weight/bulk of a separate...
I have some friends in KC that are into the outdoors - I called them and told them about this event. Hopefully you'll have a few more people there.
Let us know how this goes - it sounds like a...
I'm 6'5", and my preferred hammock is an 11-footer. Ditto on the "longer is more comfortable" comments.
I've had this since I started hanging. It seems like calf ridge gets more discussion, but heel pressure has always been the problem for me. However, I have been able to get rid of most of it by doing...
I'm 6'5" 250 lb, and I have a DB72. I can get a really flat lay - raising the foot end by 6" or 9" makes it even better.
I have read about the problems people have with calf ridge in smaller...
The Alpine Butterfly Loop (see here and here) and the Zeppelin Bend (see here and here). Both are easy to tie, very stable, and are basically impervious to jamming up, even after high loads. These...
I had always thought hammocks were neat when I was a kid, but I only ever had the chance to lay in a (very uncomfortable) spreader bar rope hammock, which luckily wasn't enough to put me off hammocks...
Welcome from just down the road in Peoria. Good luck on your first hang.
Unfortunately, I can't make it to the hang - my big Thanksgiving dinner and get-together are now on this Saturday, not the actual holiday (it's a long story).
I wish I could be there - between...
Sorry guys, I'm not going to make it to this one - my schedule didn't pan out. Hope everyone has a great time!
Count me as a maybe - it depends on work. If I can make it, I'll probably have to meet up with you all on Saturday.
After missing the last MO Hang, I am hoping to make it to this one; we'll see how work pans out.
rngn, I'll be driving from Peoria - I'd be up for a carpool.
This sounds like a great idea - I'm in.
I've never been out anywhere in southern IL, so I don't have any tips for a location.
I am bummed! Unfortunately, a business trip has come up that prevents me from making it to the hang.
I hope you all have a great time, and I look forward to the next one.
I saw this thread earlier tonight and went straight outside to lay in my hammock. In about an hour in the hammock, I saw around two dozen meteors - including one that was over a quarter of the sky...
I'm flying into Bozeman and swinging by REI for a few things before heading west.
My uncle is all about fly fishing - he suggested getting a guide and drift boat for a day and going on Big Hole....
I have been invited by some family to spend a week in Melrose, Montana - just a little south of Butte. I'll be there the week of Labor Day, and I hope to get out for an overnighter or two.
I've...
I got the same Kammok a few months back and love it. It's big, which makes for a comfortable lay without any effort (I'm 6'5", and I fit on the diagonal just fine). The Python Straps are nice too -...
I just ordered my gear, so this will be my first hang. Looking forward to it!
I am a hammock newbie looking to get his first set of gear. As a large guy (6'5", 245 lb), I am looking at longer hammocks (like the DangerBird 72), and I'll need a tarp to go with it.
I've...
I've been lurking here for a month or two, and after all the time I've spent reading and learning, I thought I'd chime in. I am a hammock newbie, as I got my first hammock (a Kammok) just before...
