I have hammocked in the cascades in the fall but not in spring. Just make sure to look up into the tree canopy and make sure the trees you're under are not diseased, dead, or in any way strange...

Dont really think it would matter which side you lay on. Your body weight will smash it down either way. I have used pads in my hammock and they work fine. I would go with the thicker, wider one...
