The lay is flat, and the craftsmanship of the hammock is top notch. Its built really well. It would make a good winter/hunting hammock.

On the head end toggle there is a knot inside the toggle, so yes if the toggle is broken you can re tie it in for new toggle. The foot end has a whoopie through the toggle with the statioanary end...
