AK has big and cranky bears so at times I've packed a custom 44 mag (and pepper) there, otherwise nope.
I'd guess that less than 5% carry north of the Mason Dixon Line, possibly more south of...
No coon problems or even sightings or tracks in 32+ years in the Cascades or Olympics or the Sierras where I've worked...Cougars will take care of business.
More gear? Less gear? Maybe yes, maybe no.
I mostly skip fiddle-faddling with poles and stakes n maybe ground cloths n stuff.
It's within a few ounces either way April to early November, and...
U bet UR bippy.
I hang where night temps are usually about 15 winter to 45 max in summer. Depending on expected temps I switch UQs between long or about half length, pad from very thin foam to...
Yep. That's it. Thanks, it's for a friend who's new to hammocking and likes this stuff as I do.
I've used this stuff for years and would like to get more. Speer sold his business etc.
Any source for this anymore?
Haven't been here for a year or more ... seems to be chooglin' along just...
Never slept around to get variety but since I have 5 there's no need to.
I confess.
In part it prolly is whimsy tho thoroughly disguised as logic (maybe not so disguised).
I know a guy who has hung in a hammock he made on walls during climbs ... similar to the Bat Hammock. He also worked with Doug Peacock. He survived and is doing well in his 60's.
The Portaledge...
I like my OLD 40* down quilt from the late 70's BUT below 32 it's good (IMO) to have the integrated hood ready to zip in right there when I've misjudged the low temp or my prep for it.
Most folks...
Hemingway was often asked how he wrote so well. His response "Think complex, write simple."
You answered the question in a most Hemingwayesque manner.
Thanks to you all, the info helped.
Down thickness can generally be used to 'scientifically' predict body protection at varying temps --- aside from certain construction techniques and body variations.
I am looking for similar...
One of the stickies lists the Temp Rating for quilts but again without the assumptions/accessories.
I am empirical by nature == My Initial experiments used a 40* bag with a new design u-quilt that...
Adding the digits in my year age = 10
The number of miles I routinely BP/day over hills etc = 18
18 is the more meaningful number.
I've had my first UQ for 6 weeks and slept with it in place about a dozen times from about 33 to 48* or so....I am very happy with it with the minor adjustments I made at the low end of the temp...
Thanks for the info Mac.
I was thinking of shortening the Medium to ease entering-exiting my HH BPr (length is fine on the Eplorer). But MIGHT now go with the 3/4 on the BPr in the BC and use...
Mee too!
And that's why I live in a place with moderate temps year round .... last several days hi's were lo-mid 60's and lo's mid 40's. Ave high in July and August is 69 ... yeah baby.
I...
Based on my 11-12x use of your Medium IX UQ (Ver 5/2010, InsTbs) from about freezing to 48 or so, you are on to something with these critters Mac.
I ordered a Universal UQ late last week but also...
Thanks for the info Mac.
I'll wait till you develop the winter TQ you mentioned somewhere.
A month ago I went to one of your UQ's and like it.
I'd like to replace an OLD (late 70'S) down quilt which currently I rate at 40* for ground sleeping but mostly use in summer in the hammock,...

Mac--
I've no previous experience with UQs, in fact never even seen one before.
As good as imagined, IOW very happy with add'l warmth and reduced bulk and reduced weight and less setup hassle. ...
I've made silk, cotton, flannel and rip stop liners to add warmth and keep the bag cleaner. They work but are a bit more awkward in a hammock.
For hanging I've switched to either Patagonia...
The Hennessy obviously broke. That's unheard of ... it's far more common for inexperienced and experienced hangers is to screw anchoring up and take a short ride.
I've occ done it by non...
Mac --
Not complaining ... very happy with the IX UQ .. Played with it last evening and find it to nicely handle the HH and my fav winter Mutt. Looks like it will increase comfort and save some...
D'Oh!
The Post Office scale says the Med Sym IX UQ w InsulTubes and extra layer and shock cords actually weigh about 8.3 oz. They must've caught an updraft while I was holding them.
I just got Mac's Symmetrical Medium IX UQ's ... won't be a UQ virgin for long ... $60 and really light and compact, think it is well under 8 oz but haven't weighed it.
When I lived and hiked on your side of the country I preferred to hike & travel without the benefit of tree leaves... views, flowers, fall !, etc. So I'd can Georgia and prolly mostly consider stuff...
I'm about out of rs from a buy almost 6 yrs ago -- the local JoAnn Fabrics sells it for $6.99. :scared:
The antidote to a chic flic is a 6 pack and 2 big bags of jerky.... (otherwise know as the redneck's lunch, supper or breakfast.)
Me too except sometimes I use my ripstop wind layer stuff sack under my knees.

The park in general 'frowns'...
Experience will help of corse.
Learn the distance of your normal pace ... mine is 30".
I prefer to hang with at least 12.5' between ... that's 5 paces.
6 to 7 paces puts me at ~15-17' which...
I think 12' is absolute minimum and suggest 13 - 15 feet. You may want to throw up a larger and/or cheaper tarp for more coverage and skip the UV damage to the HH tarp.
Your weight might be an...

Unless I've been stupid with grub and drink, it can be like a dead rock for up to 10 hours .. except for 1 or 2 pee breaks.
The surest way to toss about is to resist a pee break.
"How old is your Eno Double?"
About D minus 2 or 3.
Ordered 2 weeks ago and due in on Tuesday.
Spousette sez the HH's and Mutts are too ugly for home use ... so I get to buy another hammer.
I don't. & Maybe.
Loops on the ends of tarp tie outs and HH body tie outs happily accept girth hitched short sturdy twigs or small limbs and rocks for deadmen.
But YMMV
Gram Weenies...
I've put downed log-limb debris just upwind of the lowered windward edge of the tarp which seems to accomplish 2 things: keeps most of the wind from blowing UNDER the tarp and hammock = warmer AND...
Sometimes I hang left, sometimes I hang right and sometimes right down the middle... any which way don't matter much.
Now that you brought it up and I've noticed ... think it's mostly to the left.
After buying a HH I made a few Speers and discovered my comfort was increased even more When:
1. making the hammock a little longer
2. making it a little wider
3 getting the ridgeline just right...

For general info on Hells Canyon--
Does have hanging locations but not frequent and may require lots of improvising and searching. The area is an off season and relatively undiscovered hiking gem. ...
That camp has frequent cougar visits and a close call with a 8 yr old boy last year ... just in case kids go with you.
Don't worry about it much otherwise as I am sure you know what to do.
Suggest getting your hammock first, then work it out.

We won't give that out on the net cuz one of us is a girl and there are a few tacky wackies out there. In any case we move around thru a fairly large territory which is in the area loosely described...
