That is sad and tragic indeed.
Trees have fallen on tents with the same result, so it's certainly not a fault of the hammock.

Maybe it's just me, but I find anyone thru hiking any of the long trails interesting. :)
Welcome!
Cross Timbers is a nice little trail. We've done a number of Philmont training hikes there. Great place for a hammock.
With my son on the CT a few years back.
Chilling during a lunch break.

Very cool!
I read through your trail journal. Sounds like you two are having a great hike.
Looks like you carry a pad so you can just sleep under the tarp in the treeless alpine sections?
I...
That sounds very doable, depending on the fitness of your partners. Like the others have said, altitude can be an issue.
I'm hoping to do Copper to Twin Lakes and back next month, maybe we'll run...
x 2 on hike while she's on her trip.
With kids, "days are long and years are short".
Be there when you can. And be glad she's not saying 'why don't you get out of here and go on a hike or...
I like it.
Would you consider posting weights in the specifications?
This is what I sent to them:
Maybe if they get enough requests they will consider it. Eventually.
Or we need to convert the rule makers to hangers. :)
I just ran across this thread. My youngest son and I did a few sections of the CT a couple of years ago. We started and ended at Kenosha Pass. It's a beautiful area and we have lots of good memories...
While I'm not sure I totally agree with their position at least they took the time to reply to my request that they consider allowing advisors to hammock camp.
I've used a BA pad/bag combo in the hammock and really liked it. I generally prefer an UQ/TQ though.
I'm considering one of the new NeoAir XTherm pad/quilt combinations for a CT hike that has some...
I'm interested. PM sent
Good idea!
I sent an e-mail to the Philmont director of operations outlining my case to at least allow advisors to use hammocks.
Maybe if enough others chime in the squeeky wheel will get...
I'm the High Adventure coordinator for Troop 1077 in Dallas. Our only hangers are myself and my 2 boys. Others are curious, but no one has joined us yet.
Count me as another one disapointed in the...
My 11 year old son and I recently completed a short section of the Colorado Trail (485 mile trail from Denver to Durango). Following is a brief overview of our trip.
We drove up to Kenosha Pass...
Just ran across this thread on tarps for double hanging.
We use a Jacks R Better 10' x 11' syl nylon tarp when double hanging. It seems to provide sufficient coverage for us, even during some pretty...
My son and I hung at around 10,250 on the CT earlier this month.
Man, what an awesome trail.

And what Knotty said, lightning really doesn't follow the rules.
I do not like lightning, and I much prefer being off the ground.
Dang, and just when I thought I had all the acronyms down.
Pan, what's a DDP?
I have a Marmot Precip, Frogg Toggs and Dri Ducks.
I generally take the Dri Ducks. Lighter, least expensive and seem to be the most breathable. Good for layering and I can use the jacket for a...
Also, be prepared that the answer might be 'no'.
In that case you have some deciding to do.
Not going causes resentment.
Going anyway will certainly take away some of the joy of the hike.

I use the ring buckle setup, so on the hammock I unhook one end and roll it up tightly while keeping tension on the other end. I also fold my tarp using the same method.
I find that this seems to...
Need size long, left zip.
Thanks!
FWIW I found that duct tape sticks much better to evazote foam than the Gorilla tape does (and it's much less expensive also).
Gorilla tape is good for prototypes since it comes off much easier....
Any further info on this would be much appreciated, since I am considering the same thing. What type of tape works best on the GG evazote pads?
The HH Scout includes hammock with bugnet, stock tarp and stuff sack.
It's not the lightest setup 2lbs, 11oz.
Hmmm... when checking the weight of that on the Hennessy Hammock site I see that they...
I have a brand new, never been used HH Scout. I'll part with it for $75 shipped.
but of course!
Cannibal,
When are you planning on starting?
My son and I are going to do sections 3 - 7 starting July 1st. You will probably pass us if you start around then. Hope to see you on the trail.
...
Cannibal,
Hope you get the time off from work to do your hike.
Who know, maybe we'll see you on the trail this summer.
If you figure out a way to hang in the alpine sections, be sure to let us...
Sweet, that is some awesome rope. Let us know how it works out.
When you get it, can you post the weight?
If you don't need all 200' I'll take be glad to take some of the extra off your hands....
1/4" x 41" x 61" trimmed to fit the silk liner.
Oops... sorry, wrong terminology. I meant as a frame for a frameless backpack, not as a waterproof liner.
I found this to be true and a big hassle which kept me from using the GG pads.
I like the GG pad's insulating properties and light weight, but disliked the feel and the hassle of using it. I...
Coffee,
I agree that there is a low probability that they will change the policy, at least in the near term. Do I think they will make a policy change because they get one letter about it? No.

I second the recommendation of a Garmin unit.
Good products plus you can only download to a Garmin unit on the geocache.com site.
This is a lot of fun. We're getting the Scouts involved in...
I recently returned from a Philmont trek and had a great time. I only wish I could have taken my hammock. I sure could have used the better sleep.
I am in the process of drafting a letter to the...
1Tripod,
I'm a little late weighing in on this, but I am curious:
You seem to be sophisticated in your gear acquisition and use, and while you may not consider yourself SUL, you are certainly...
Currently Committee Chairman and Webelos II den leader for youngest son and ASM for older son's troop. Former Cubmaster and Charter Org Rep. Woodbadge 2007 at PTC.
Just returned from Philmont 612 P8...
I'm another Scout leader using a hammock. My son also uses his about half the time. While no one else has gotten one yet we have had a number of Scouts and dads look them over carefully and seem to...
Some of the recent straps are more susceptible to abrasion from the smaller diameter spectra support ropes. It seems to be caused by the friction of pulling the spectra thru the loops when tightening...
Just checked my mail and found 2 manilla envelopes from Hennessy Hammocks. The envelopes contained free replacement tree huggers along with a very nice note from Tom explaining the potential issue...
Slowhike,
That's the knot that my son and I both use and it has never allowed the straps to slip. Very easy to tie and untie and works every time.
John
I have the BA Lost Ranger (I love that bag) and insulated air core mattress. I am warm down to 38ish (haven't had the chance to take it lower yet), but not really comfortable using the pad. I find...
Welcome Ashman! I did the same as you, heard about hammocks and this group, spent some time 'listening' then ordered a Hennesy from REI. I chose that route because of their return policy. If you are...
I second Stoikurt's opinion.
I use the No Sniveller long for the HH Explorer underquilt. I was going to get a nest but wanted a little bit more length on the coverage.
Was in it last night in...
To answer your question, one of our scouts has the Coleman bag and is very happy with it. I don't have any personal experience with the Kelty. Both of those are a lot of bag for the money.
...
I have a BA bag. My personal preference is to not use the pad. I have a JRB underquilt for colder weather.
I have a BA Lost Ranger and the insulated air core mattress and a HH Explorer UL. I have used the bag only, bag with mattress and bag as a top quilt. My personal preference is to use the bag without...
