I'm of the opinion this has been entirely discontinued. It has disappeared from the shelves here in the Central Valley of California, where a bag of this weightis appropriate year-round. It stayed...
Unless Walmart's website has something listed incorrectly, the 5.6 oz of down fill in the Chinook bag is significantly less than the 200 gram (7 oz) or 250 gram (8.8 oz) in the two versions of the...
You can remove the zipper stops, add new slides and then install new zipper stops or sew the fabric tape of the coil zipper to stop the sliders from coming off the end. It isn't too hard.
A pair of 250's sold out of my local within the last few weeks.
I'm in. Very generous.
Nice price.
I received an e-mail flyer with the 40% off code "ROPE" good for any bulk/by-the-foot rope orders at WestMarine. Amsteel Blue 7/64 1600lb breaking strength for $0.18/foot after discount. Add to...
I hope this isn't considered commercial spam, but I wanted to pass along a coupon code for 40% off bulk rope orders at WestMarine. Enter "ROPE" in the coupon box at checkout for 40% off.
They...
I'd suggest the tension cables are there to prevent deflection from centerline at the midpoint of the strut. This dramitically increases load at which elastic (Euler) buckling begins. With a higher...
Could a constrictor knot tied in-the-bight work? You could tie this in a portion of a continuous loop and slip it over your hammock. Once tightened around something a constrictor knot is supposed...
I was about to add something about "unless you are just asking about details", but at the same time I figured any additional information on the gear offered is good for all to know. Oh well, carry...
All trade offers need to be made in public per the FT forum rules...
What has the clown been drinking?
I prefer these. They are SUL, so you have to be careful with them and they take longer to do the job, but at less than a gram, they are way lightweight. Did I mention they are all-natural?
I received my backorder late last week, so they are re-stocking and working through the list.
Found it! Now I can give credit where it is due: I.M. Knotlost posted the sliding toggle idea last year. I adopted it, but had to follow his 'extra security' suggestion to add a second half hitch...
That's what I am using with the dowels instead of the marlinspike. You can reposition the dowel anywhere along the amsteel line, and I use a continuous loop at each end of the hammock to hang from...
I'm using a 3/4" dowel with a hole drilled in it instead of a marlinspike. I saw it recommended by someone here and tried it.
Drill a hole perpendicular to the axis of a a 1-1/2" length of 3/4"...
7/64" is rated at 1600lbs breaking strength. If you stay close to a 30° hang angle you will have at least a 5:1 ratio to your working load. Amsteel is good stuff for hammock suspension.
Based on your described layout, and assuming an anchor line at 60 degrees from horizontal, I did some back-of-the envelope math. My calculations put the axial load in a pole at ~170 for a static 200...
Thanks for the heads-up on the great customer service from Westmarine. They are really owning this one and living up to it. Their posted size information on the website is incorrect for 7/64" STS...
It does need a push to get started, and occasionally needs another push to replace momentum lost due to air drag and friction in the attachment for the pendulum. What the earth's rotation does is...
It's hard to believe how small this stuff is for 1000lb capacity. I received mine yesterday and am just thinking of the possibilities of what to do with it.
Look at nacra533's videos and pictures in the thread he linked. They show what the over and under configurations look like for a tarp ridgeline on the bias. I much prefer having the ridgeline under...
It's in their online catalog on page 937, the same page as the Amsteel Blue. All of the small-diameter amsteel blue product numbers are coming up with no results when searching the West Marine...
We love the deal you posted. I was just providing clarifying information to make sure folks following the buy recommendation from the thread know what they are getting. I'm very happy with my 100'...
I'm guessing they are selling the 2mm line, but are labeling it in English units as 7/64" rather than 3/32". NE Ropes doesn't seem to have a 2.5mm STS-12 line. In their catalog West Marine states...
Like Silvrsurfr, I couldn't find sampson amsteel in 7/64, saw New England Dynema single braid STS 12-75. This is made of the same dyneema-75 fiber as amsteel, and has the same nominal diameter and...
I'm not all that experienced with fabric, but from what I see that is a normal selvedge edge. Roll it into the hem or the seam. Don't cut it off. Those edges shouldn't fray like a cut edge would....
Direct link to nacra533's post with the videos
I can second Nacra533's mention of the ridgeline being on the bias. My tarp definitely benefits from a continuous ridgeline underneath it.
I participated in that thread, and sewed up a tarp from 15' of 64" wide material creating a rather ungainly tarp that was more than 14' long at the ridgeline and a narrow 7' wide. That didn't work...
Wow! Such a generous gesture.
Merry Christmas.
All done here. Shipping out my end today after a miscue on my part.
Feel free to close & move the thread.
As for the BSA stove policy, I understand there are interpretations that could...
Hardhead,
How many MRE's did you want for the patrol bag & bivy? (or did I misunderstand and you were looking for the jacket I just promised away?)
HK. I'll take your offer. I don't know why I was being so slow to accept.
So OneEye sends HK201 a military jacket & pants in exchange for 2 pieces (approximately 13' each) of gray silnylon, some...
Oops. Ha ha, my % difference was correct, but I fumbled copying the equation for the section modulus. The d is cubed, not to the 4th power, and the divisors are 6 or 6*sqrt2, not 12 and 12*sqrt2.
...
Loading on the diagonal does not change the stiffness. The moment of inertia is (d^4)/12 for each.
Loading on the diagonal increases the maximum stress by sqrt2 at the corners. Squarely loaded,...
How wide is the silnylon?
I'm going to mull on this offer for a bit. If it were all a single piece of sil I would be jumping on it, but the pattern I had in mind needs a 5yd piece intact.
For...
FT: Military issue goretex woodland camouflage jacket

The kids tell me I have it all wrong; I should wear the vest like a snuggie, then the quilt zipped to it will wear like a blanket down past my toes.
The down is 650fp, so based on volume...
Thanks, G. It turned out a lot better than my first one. It was a 2-jacket top quilt sized for my son. The size and loft worked out, but no footbox and I had problems keeping straight in my head...
I don't think the JC Penney Puffers have been available at clearance for almost a year, but I just traded for a 3rd jacket and sewed up a top quilt yesterday and today, so I thought I'd show it off....
Ok, so:
Homemade Hiker is trading 1 JC Penney Puffer jacket to OneEye in exchange for 4 Military-issue Meal(s) Ready to Eat.
PM inbound with contact information...
That sounds good to me. Would you be willing to part with 2 puffers for more MRE's, or is 4 as many as you will ever need?
Let's see, according to the law of diminishing marginal utility, your...
I assume you are discussing details of how much down & amsteel for how much stuff, but I didn't see any offers on the remaining (3) JCP jackets.
Are you sated on down yet? I have a 16oz 550fp...
Ah, but eliminating paddle drip and the need for drip rings?
I'm thinking of ordering a set and using it on some Greenland style and European style kayak paddles.
Liz,
So glad we could make it this year. It was great meeting you along with Gary, Gary, Dave, Dave and Victor. I'm used to seeing more than one Mike at an event, so this was an amusing change....
I'll be able to make it this year. I'll be bringing my 3 boys.
I think I missed the information on helping cover expenses. Should we be bringing $10 or $20 to help cover the reservation cost, or...
Dennis,
I loved seeing the two different stow methods you showed in that video. I'll have to keep them in mind next time I'm out & about with my hammock.
