I gave the whoopies a fair shake last week from Gorham to Grafton Notch. I've really fallen in love with rope splicing and I think the whoopies are super cool, but I'm going back to straps and...
Thank you, that looks perfect.
Just finished a cuben tarp with Lineloc3 adjusters at each tie-out. I got the 2.2mm line that zpacks sells and recommends as a good fit for those. The plan was for a locked brummel fixed eye on...
My current setup is straps, cinch buckles, and carabiners. Tonight, I played around with whoopie slings and marlin spike hitches using trail sticks. These strike me as about the heaviest and...
Splicing newbie question.
The final two pictures in the original post aren't showing up for me. The last one is with the bury squished up and the tail sticking out just a little. I assume that...
Thanks, WV. I appreciate the thorough reply.
Just to be clear, the wrinkling I'm worried about isn't just the act of folding a narrow sticky edge over. What I mean is the inherent inability of...
I watched Sgt. Rock's excellent video on the cuben tarp construction, which uses flat seams. I'd like to make one with cat sides.
I'm concerned about bunching when hemming. When I've made sil...
I used to offer either a snug stuff sack for the KAQ or a fairly loose one. The latter is what I use and was overwhelmingly more popular. I doubt I sold more than four or five with the smaller...
I use a homemade noseeum "sock" that weighs five ounces (I think). I used to have a half one as has been mentioned, but I don't think it's worth it.
The only advantage that I see of the half...
I don't have a dog now, but what about a separate hammock tied to the same head tree as yours? I know people use that setup sometimes for spouses or kids. Seems like it would let you stay in...
Grizz, outstanding work.
You know you've got the right solution at last when it's clean and simple like this. I look forward to making a pair of my own. Really great job.
Start sewing. In an hour, your mother-in-law can show you everything you need to get started. You couldn't ask for a better couple of starter projects than a hammock and an SPE. When you're done,...
Both were the old camo ones. I understand they're very popular; that's the part I'm confused about. The size is good and no one loves camo more than me, but they don't seem to actually work.
I...
What's up with these tarps? I got one a couple years ago after more recommendations here than I can remember. I used it a few times, but passed it along to a friend when I decided to make my own.

West Marine in Rockville was a bust. Nothing but huge line.
Still trying to find either something for the support or to use for my ridge line that's local and not nylon. Coming up dry.
I'll check that out, thanks. I hadn't heard from them. I got my Spyderline from APS, which is actually only a block away from my girlfriend's mom's place, but I need to have this done tomorrow and I...
Ah, even better. That picture of the HH exposed is just what I was looking for.
Now what I'm worried about is later in that thread where you noted the stock HH rope is too big to prussik...
Okay, so looks like I can work the lark's head with the single line and just have a free end. I'm guessing if I just sit down with a piece of rope and a ring for five minutes, this will all be...
Okay, here's where I get real stupid.
You mean that you left the stock rope attached as it came from the factory and tied the rings into that? I'm love to do that, but I can't picture how to...
I've got a homemade hammock with buckles and straps. The buckles are attached to the hammock with a loop of Spyderline. It's lark's headed to the buckle and then to the hammock body behind the...
Strapworks has polypro for about $0.50 a yard. They've got a really wide selection:

You're sleeping naked outside on a 20-degree night in a 40-degree bag and you're shivering. Someone throws a 0-degree bag on top of you. Do you get warmer or colder?
You're sleeping naked...
Thou shalt contribute to the Figure 9 thread.
I believe you could modify mine pretty easily. Just move the bottom corners of the plan up the sides to the length you want.

The last tarp I made, they were terrible. I really took my time on this one. What I lack in ability, I make up for in pinning.
I was falling asleep on a hike in New Mexico when it hit me that every part of my set-up was made by me. Pretty good stuff.
I doubt it would really be an issue on the tarp tie-outs compared to the hammock supports. Just a good way of justifying putting them on there for looks :)
My feeling is that the d-ring will last longer than just the loop. Cord on that webbing time after time is going to have some effect on it.
It's the same reason I switched from sewn loops to...
7/8", actually. It was all the fabric store had.
I love the color. I've been forever for brown sil to come back and saw that Ed had some. In talking to him, it sounded like there's already not...
Everyone loves pictures.
Here's some of my latest tarp. It's my third tarp, second cat one. My last one was pretty good, but looked mighty homemade and could have used some more coverage.

Crap, I didn't know the Trek Lights were rated that high. I've got one for my ridgeline, but have the C.A.M.P. ones on my suspension. I was just thinking yesterday how much I don't like the bling. ...
I camp on a river island with a lot of sand. One of the (many) nice surprises about switching from a HH to a homemade open open top wasn't that it kept sand out, but that it was super easy to remove...
warbonnet, I took your advice and drew up new plans a bit wider and a bit longer on the sides. Thanks for the advice. I definitely like it better.
The sil I got from Ed measured 64" wide. I'm...
I'm not trying to start that whole thing again :)
Either the bow or a chain will work just fine for me. Just leaning toward the chain because I already tried the bow and want to compare.
Thanks, warbonnet. I'll make another plan and check it out against the tarp material laid out. Any downside to the extra length other than the small amount of weight?
How'd you do your cats? Last time, I used a bow and string approach. This time, I'm thinking of trying to make the pattern by hanging a chain.
I had considered the winter tarp, but I'm going to keep this one simple, I think. I made one similar to that before and didn't like all the extra material. It is a cool design, though, so I may try...
I've decided to make a new tarp a bit larger than my current one. After checking out Brian's and BlackBishop's, I've come up with the following blueprint. It's a little longer, a little wider, and...
Thanks, headchange4u. You can also find them at the site. I've moved hosting out of my closet and onto an actual commercial server, so there shouldn't be any more problems with availability.
I'm...
Okay, site is back up.
I've been hosting out of my closet for years, but have switched to a commercial web host, so should be up for good now.
Check the articles section for instructions on the...
Glad to see the reply time hasn't slowed any since I've been away.
No problem. My favorite part was always seeing photos of those who'd made their own.
Hey gang, sorry for the eternal absence. My site (http://www.kickassquilts.com) is down now, but will be up again in the next couple of days.
Sorry for the long hiatus. I've been doing real job...
What do you gain on this system as opposed to one that has rings on the hammock and a single length of webbing that goes around the tree and then into those rings? I don't understand why you would...
I've been playing with both rings and cinch buckles the last week or so, although I've only been able to do backyard testing so far.
I haven't had rings slip yet. What I do is put a bight of...
I got my CAMP Nano biners ($8) and SMC descending rings ($2.50) from REI. Both are useful for suspension.
Mine doesn't carry webbing by the foot, but they do have some tie-down polypro straps in...
I made myself a pair of andersj buckles (http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/showthread.php?t=2357).
Making them was really fun. I did parking lot testing tying a suspension unit (webbing, buckle,...
I use them on river trips sometimes on an island that has really big trees. I do just like Cerberus suggested and toss my boat straps in one of my dry bags.
They grip tight after a night of...
So, you're tying the slip knot around the webbing coming out of the rings. I'm doing it in between the rings. So, instead of passing the free end through the rings and out, I'm passing a bight...
I used to use two layers of Polarguard 3D and it's what I still have on my top and bottom quilts. I sleep very easily in that down to the mid 20s or so, although I tend to sleep a bit warm.
Since...
I got a similar radio a few years back that I thought was the goofiest thing ever. I chucked it in my bag on a river trip figuring it wouldn't even last that long. It's since become one of my...
