I would love to come to Santee for this event but I will be working at Columbia's Greek Festival. If you are coming through, on your way to Santee, or starting in Columbia do drop by the Greek...
I just finished my MaoMart down bag overstuffing. I doubled plus some the down that was supposed to be in the bag. Here is a video of me over stuffing a baffle.
Looks warm.

I placed an order for one of these plus the free pad on Friday and should have it next week.
What is a good cheap source for down? Would it be worth opening one of these walmart bags and...
Camping and almost all outdoor pursuits are better, for me, when it is cold. When the temps and %humidity nexus above 85 it is just too much for me.
If you have any interest in geocaching there are a lot of them at Sesqui...one called sesqui in fact.
Looks like it will be cold but not freezing

It feels and this is odd.. like fine corduroy Aluminized Tyvek. I have only been in it for 20 minutes whuilst sitting on the couch. It is a bit warm but I don't know if warm enough to replace a bag.
Some shower curtains are teflon treated...so that makes them techy too.

I have a Taurus 45ACP revolver in Ti. It uses 5 round moon clips. Light and F still equals M*A
I am working on another one of my brute force projects and am trying to figure out the best way to attach tie-outs to the tarp. It will be a big red barn of a tarp. I understand reinforcing the...
I meant to post this a week ago but as is frequently my case life intervened.
I tested the my thinsulate under-quilt and thinsulate top-quilt in the upstate of South Carolina. Really the central...
I caught a 27lb catfish in lake Marion in the late 1980s. I have always loved Santee Cooper Country...It looks even better by kayak!
SnugPak makes a whole line of insulated things from jackets-pants-sleeping bags with this Softie insulation. I have seen it in catalogs for ages but got to handle some at the SHOT show this year. ...
I would think that a bridge would help you develop your balance a bit more than a gathered end of knotted hammock.
Welcome from Columbia- Forest Acres neighborhood.
Tinny is probably correct about the damage done to trees by the ropes or amsteel *but* just because you are right and can defend your point does not mean overrule the 'slack' and respect hammockers...
I had my honda accord stolen from infront of my house back in 2000. The loss of the car was annoying but not catastrophic. The most annoying thing is that the goblins got two pairs of pants, a...
I don't know if anyone used thinsulate for an underquilt but I had some from another set of projects and thought I'd have a go at it. It is not light by any stretch but it is warm. I will try it...
Welcome from Columbia
Those pictures could have not been any better if a National Geographic photographer had accompanied you. Awesome pics.
I, as of yet, have less than 5 nights under the stars in my hammock. I probably have 5x that amount of time just hanging out in the hammock in the back yard. What would you do under the following...
In the last 10 months I purchased a Golite Pinnacle backpack which has been reviewed positively on hammockforums.net. I purchased it because someone posted a link to a sale on golite.com. I was...
Getting off of the ground is so much better for my back. 20% of Americans are walking around with an asymptomatic herniated disc.
I got a touch of dysentery in Egypt. I used their version kaopectate and then finally purchased 5 days of cipro. If I was on a long hike I would secure cipro in advance.
Maybe that is what the canopy beds are really for....ridgelines and bug nets
This is wholly masterful. What a great idea. I love how you have 'tenty' space and the incorporation of hammock and stove.
I am still very much a novice hammock hanger and until RaulPerez' 100th...
Welcome. There are lots of great people here. I am amazed by the depth and breadth of knowledge on these forums.
I use a straight piece of coathanger and scotch tape to make whoopie and loopie slings. It does work well and was around the house. The CAT5 solution is probably even better.

I like black and dark green. Black is almost invisible and leads to stealth.

I think I have a better mastery of things when I have constructed them. I just need my thread injecting skillset to go way up. I am slow and careful and so far the stuff doesn't look wholly like a...

I too am in Columbia South Carolina and a new hammock guy. I have made two hammocks and now thankfully am no longer a groundling. Camping in a hammock is now the only way for me.

I use a cut piece of coat hanger and scotch tape to make my whoopies and last night my first loopy.

Thanks for the alert. I just ordered two. I went to order one weeks ago at the 29.95 price but thankfully Gary Olen's people were out of stock.
These hammockin people are very helpful.

I used a ball point pen, scotch tape, and the straight section of clothes hanger with good results on Samson's AmSteel Blue 7/64ths"

I purchased a 1928 Singer 99 from ebay. It does one stitch and works well. I have even used it to repair my leather wallet. Amazing what these steel and iron machines can do. I am very impressed.
Hammocks are too cheap to appeal to Backpacker. If everyone that wanted hammock qualities purchased hammocks or God forbid..made them then all those two man tents and bivvys would never sell.

Friday was my first full night in the hammock. We did an overnight campout to pacify the kids and while the rest of the family was trapped inside the tent I was slowly swinging in my 1st experiment...
Ownership and crossing the barriers of fear and ignorance are all great reasons to make your own stuff. I learn more from doing something, even poorly, much more than I get from explanation and...

I am thinking of using a flexible cutting board sheet from Dollar Tree to provide backing for tie-outs on my HFTools woodland camo tarp.
This is my thought: If I were to cut out part of this...
I'll post pics as soon as the replacement lens for my D80 comes in and I have a bright day to set it up. I'll even take a few pics of my 1928 Singer 99 thread injector.

I have watched 50 or so YouTube videos on the construction, set up, and use of the camping hammock. I have noticed that everyone has these ultralight high end purchased or DIY silNylon tarps. Is...
Because of this group of hangers I was 'forced' to spend a little bit of time over the last few weeks collecting stuff to make a cheap hammock.
Most of my purchases were from ebay or Mao-Mart. I...
This is a general question for the DIY members. What materials should you buy in bulk? Basically what are the materials that you always use that you did or wished you had purchased in quantity.

Another thing I have used to supplement the hot water bottle is to drink a liter of hot chocolate before bed. It will keep you warm...but you might have to wake up and fill another bottle with warm...
