That's what I used, I ended up going for the largest size(1 7/16 inch, is that right? I'm from canada we don't use these inch things) they have, and it only ended up costing me about $100.

This design is literally exactly what I wanted out of a hammock stand.

I just made this stand this weekend with 1"1/2 hemlock dowels. I works fine. The ridge line I may have cut a little bit too long(about an extra foot) but I have to say, it took me less than an hour...
