Mark one down as home and showered. That place will kick you butt!!
For some reason... I was expecting a bit more. Now, hopefully the hang will be a bit more spectacular....which I have no reason to doubt..even without the German entrenching tool or Swedish pressure...
Wow! 999! I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all of the little people that made this moment possible. Now for the actual winner....
I'll gladly trade this keyboard for a pair of hiking sticks tomorrow.
Those dutch ovens do help to balance the weight in your pack.
Do you have your prepared statement..er..prepared?
Is anyone bringing one of these?

Multi use! It can be a pressure cooker AND your pack...straps not included...
My noon trailhead departure would appear to preempt my Carolina BBQ experience this weekend. I doubt I'll be able to pick up any before hitting the trail. :(
Hey! I'm not the one packin pork! I've got apples, bagels, coffee and energy bars. High fibre? Perhaps. Lethal?...not so much.
Depending on the pork situation, one may be needed.:scared:
Oddly enough, leaving the 3 1/2 pound German entrenching tool behind helped a lot too!
Moving to a 30 ounce GoLite pack made a big difference from my 106 ounce Deuter pack.
The rest of it is just TRAIL and error.
Since my DL hammock holds my 8 ounce GG pad and it is gonna be warm enough, I'm skipping the UQ. My BPL TQ weighs 13 ounces. Gave up the MSR water filter for my Steripen. Five pounds of that is food!...
With food and 1L of water, my pack is weighing in at just a hair under 20lbs. I suppose if I substituted something else for my fresh bagels and apples, I might be less.
Appreciate the relay effort mtncmpr.
I don't think it will be your palate that gets cleansed from that stuff!
We might not get to take much of a break, but if they are going at their allegedly "leisurely pace", we should catch them before the end of the day.
If I get pie menu beforehand, I may see what...
You mean we need to treat our water! Say it ain't so in them virgin hills.
Me thinks Soundwitness and I will be departing from the same trailhead as the rest instead of Tablerock. We'll probably be a couple of hours behind unless the morning pie break goes over.
The trick is ensuring a gorge rat sighting before you pack.
The weather.gov and accuweather.com forecasts appear to be diverging a bit. Accuweather is getting hotter.
The weather.gov site lets you click on the actual location and adjusts for altitude and...
I bought some Keen Voyagers last year on a Thursday. The next day I left for a three day trip to Slickrock Wilderness. I covered about 14 miles a day in some nasty rocks, roots and streams with about...
Tonight's tips brought to you by Slowhike's Graphic Grooming... I don't know if I need to visualize "another word from our sponsor".
NEVER trust a hornet that shaves!:scared:
Soundwitness getting there about noon has wreaked havoc on my plans to pick up carolina BBQ enroute to the trailhead for my Friday night dinner ( and I have no complaints for a man willing to drive...
Does this gorge treat its inhabitants to winds coming from both ends? I get those a lot around here. Sounds like a herd of rhinos thundering down the mountain before it blasts your tarp. Twenty...
It would either be fiercely entertaining for all or a possible entry into the "great moments in bad decisions making history".
You will be spoken of highly regardless.
If you pack your muni, you might be able to leave most of your camp insulation behind.
Soundwitness, are we still on for a Friday afternoon meetup at Tablerock?
Shug, you do have a challenge if you're starting earlier in the week. You get to pack for temps between near freezing and 87°. A little dryness, a little rain and a LOT of humidity.
You may need...
Weather.gov does show the current conditions as being fair. This is good as I do not like unfair weather. It's bad enough that life is not fair.
According to Accuweather, looks like hot, muggy, some rain and probably not less than 60°. The weather.gov forecast for table Rock looks a bit less clammy.
...
"Water was close to normal pool I'd say when I went, and I don't think I sung soprano as I crossed there (as Bob would say). At most it's about thigh deep."
That's what I was wondering. I know...
How many and about how deep are the stream crossings on this trip? I'm trying to make a call on footwear. I'm guessing the streams there are a comfy 40° or so?... Fahrenheit. 40° Kelvin REALLY slows...
Looks like Friday is shaping up to be drier and warmer. Saturday and Sunday still look to be wet. I'm guess the showers there are pretty scattered like in the Smokies. One swath will get dumped on...
Agreed, it does sound like parsing. However, the variation in method is that one is inclusive and the other is exclusive. I went inclusive this time.
Do I plan on sleeping? If so, I'd better have...
The strange part is that it really did not take any effort or plan. Instead of spending a ton of time on what I could leave behind or reduce, I decided to come at it from the other side and just take...
Looks like if I use the GG wide pad and my BPL quilt, my pre food and water weight is gonna be about 10 lbs 4 ounces. If I bring my Steripen instead of that MSR miniworks, I could go under 10 lbs.
Heck, that's a big reason why I made my DL hammock...so that I could slap my 1/4" GG pad between the layers without it sliding around. I never bother to cut my 40"X60" down. Now I have the option of...
If it's gonna be that wet, I may just slap a pad between the layers of my DL hammock. I've yet to see a GG pad wet out. Looks like it might be warm enough for me to just bring my 13 ounce BPL summer...
Maybe you could fabricate a giant beak to put in the pile? Where's an ostrich thigh bone when you need it...
It won't be the first time for me to be caked in mud and soaked to the bone. I believe that I'll stick with my supplex pants over a kilt.
Looks like the forecast just a got a bit damper. That might make climbing some of those gulleys interesting.
Just checked the updated forecast. Looks like we'll be celebrating the "Festival of Humidity" that weekend. makes me wonder if I need to take more of a "synthetic" approach to my gear.
Anyone know...
I might bring a Kelly Kettle just to make sure my pack is not too light.
So I guess I need to PM via paypal for the Figure 9's there Mac. So much for trailhead delivery.
26 pounds. Is that before you go to the bathroom, or were you going to carry that anyways?
Heck, mine is the 3.5 lb stainless one. I'd probably bring a few pieces of fat wood. with fatwood, anything else will burn be it dry, green or polka dotted.
Still, easy to justify on a river trip,...
Not too hot, and not too cold. Now if I can shed some of my other gear, I might just bring my Kelley Kettle. I'll be the bell of the ball when it comes time to wash dishes and make coffee. :D
Soundwitness, I was going to start at 3pm with Mac at Table Rock. My shorter commute will let me shift my schedule around if you're wanting someone to hike in with.
Leaving at 3 am would be pretty...
