Brought it with me on a four day trip to test and, surprisingly, it took a bit of fiddling to get it to work properly. I got it right by the third night, which was perfect timing as it was the first...
So... I made an UQP from 3yds of calendered 1.1Ripstop from RSBTR. It ended up at 169g total, and at that weight and tiny pack volume I think I'll just bring it on every trip.
I chose not to make...
I used #3 on the last two hammocks I made, and no problems so far. It doesn't seem like the zipper is under very much stress at all except when it's half open and I'm sitting on the edge of the...
My experience is that length is more important than width. There's probably a dirty joke in there somewhere. Why not make a wide 12 footer?
I had some issues with my tarp doors in high winds recently and made an attempt at a door system that was simpler and quicker than the one I used previously. I don't think this is an original idea,...
The OP thanks you :)
So... I went on a trip a few days ago that answered the question for me. I'm making an UQP, and I'm making a few alterations to my big tarp as well. There was wind. From all directions. At once...
Ok, you're confusing me
I have a rain poncho that's more or less the appropriate length. I think I'll experiment with that a little before I decide to make a proper UQP.
Thanks for your input, guys. I'll move the UQ-protector to the bottom of the DIY-projects list, then :)
Nice work!
Hello everyone.
At the moment I have two tarps, one 11' Xenon wide asymmetrical DIY and a RSBTR 12' winter DIY. The asym is 370g and the winter is 580g. Both tarps provide more than enough...
Ha ha! I'd like to see that :D
:scared:
I did some more maths, and I get 7/64 amsteel from dutch at 8,5NOK/m with shipping. If the cost of the package and shipping is less than 350NOK there is no tax, otherwise there is an...
Wow. I thought Norway was bad. You're _really_ getting shafted!
Isn't the price for 25ft amsteel from Dutch 5.5usd? That's around 46SEK for 7,6m, which is around 6SEK/m. Even with shipping and customs I think that's probably a better deal.
I'd like to say...
Reinforcements it is, then. Thanks again :)
I see a Hilleberg Akto-style hiking pole tent in my future :shades:
Awesome, thanks!
Just one more question: Are the end reinforcement patches on the ridgeline needed when doing the grosgrain method? I'm guessing yes, but I'd like to hear your opinion.
I have developed a habit of copying your stuff, and this will be no different
However, to avoid making a blatant rip-off, I will go for an 11' ridgeline, and forego the cat cuts. This is...
That made me laugh out loud. Thanks!
Looks great!
Dakujem :)
Thanks for posting this. I've been to SK many times, but never sailing or hiking. I'm definitely putting it on the list :)
Can you camp anywhere or are there restrictions to be aware of?
I promised myself I wouldn't make any more tarps, so please don't make a kit in black...
Awesome work. I admit I was waiting to do the bugnet for my chameleon clone in the hope that you would do one first that I could copy
Thanks!

Please, you look.
Absolutely. They even got the local sea monsters right!
Ah, thanks!
I'm currently packing my stakes and hammock suspension in a small drawstring pouch, but I'm thinking about sewing a pouch onto the next snakeskin I make. What is this pencil roll of which you speak?
Impressive!
That's more or less what I ended up doing. Yours looks better, though!
Ok. I sewed this one up today. I should have been more careful with pinning and getting things aligned perfectly, and getting the end caps on the right way out (duh) but it turned out ok.
Here's...
Are you sure this is your first DIY-project? :O
Yes, that was very helpful. Thanks!

Yes. His method isn't going to work for this application.
Do you hem the sides before you attach the zipper?
Hello.
In preparation for my first hammock with a detachable, zippered bugnet (basically a Dream Hammock/Chameleon ripoff), I've got most of it figured, and planned, out except how to attach the...
Thanks!
I believe this thread has come full circle
Since I posted this thread I've replaced the tie-outs with beastee Dees and cleats from cleats.co.uk. There are some pictures and norwegian gibberish here:...
Thanks! Jellyfish's videos helped me _a lot_ and I get out the note pad every time Kitsapcowboy posts anything. Tac blades has a lot of good stuff too.
RSBTR are pretty generous with their fabrics, but enough for two tarps seems a little excessive
Good luck with your project!
That's really strange... Maybe there is some secret Hennessy whipping sauce or something they use to make the hammocks seem shorter, because I may be wrong about the Safari being shorter than my...
Are you sure? I used to own a HH Safari and, though I never actually measured it, it seemed significantly shorter than my 11' DIY. I would imagine the explorer to be a little shorter than or equal in...
I think you'll be perfectly comfortable in the standard width. The Explorer is significantly shorter IIRC, and length is a much bigger factor for comfort than width IMO.
There is a facebook group...
Where is it? :D
Cool, thanks!
Those pictures are awesome!
Off topic: How do you connect your tarp ridgeline to your whoopies (I assume they are whoopies)? Prusik knots?
