I used the same tarp material and Silnet for both of my poly tarps. I thinned it down to be brushable and so far it has worked great.

I'm not getting my hammock anywhere near the fire, hence the chair. Otherwise I agree, just use the hammock as a chair.

Once I would have scoffed at anyone bringing a chair. Now I can't imagine going without one.

I put mine in a chair underneath my tarp next to my hammock. Yes I take a chair. Don't judge.
Welcome! I'll be hiking in the Forney Creek section in a couple of weeks. Love the Smokies.
Love this AT section. Just did Iron Mountain to 19E in September. Nothing like busting out of the woods at Cloudlands and then having wide open views for most of the rest of the day.
Looks like...
The Kevlar is really just being held by friction on itself so I'm not sure how much actual work the buckle does. I'm not planning on using anything else mainly because the multi-buckle works great...
I use the RSBTR Multi-Buckle and Dutch's 2.2 Kevlar's like this. Loop the strap around the middle bar and hook the hammock continuous loops over the straps behind the buckle. You just HAVE to make...
Having a scale really opened my eyes to what I really needed to bring and what i brought "just in case." Now my just in case stuff has really been whittled down and I still have everything i need to...
I still use a stuff sack for my clothes as i like them together but i use one much larger than i need so it's still "squishy" enough to conform to my pack shape. Other than that it pretty much all...
I accidentally took a 5.0 UQ down to 23 and was fine. Not toasty but not overly uncomfortable. I was however using my 6.0 TQ and I'm a warm sleeper.

This is the suspension i settled on. I use 2.2 12 ft straps and multi-buckles so i don't even have to tie a knot because I'm just that lazy. Entire suspension weighs 2.5 oz.
Campground type hanging or backcountry type hanging? Some places to check out off the top of my head.
USFS Campgrounds (fee)
Mortimer Campground - 1hr 30min
Curtis Creek Campground - 1hr 20min...
I've spent many many hours jumping/diving off the rocks on the far side. One of my favorite spots on Earth.
View from behind our hang on the Black Mountain Crest trail.

Looks like the Commissary Ridge area. Great camp spot. Was just there the weekend before. Glad you had a good trip. Water is drying up already but otherwise a great hike location.
We spent the first night at Deep Gap somewhere between the two clearings where you'd put a tent. You can see both of those from google maps aerial view. Next night would have been at commissary...
Saturday night on the Black Mtn Crest trail. Perfect.

I use the 11 foot Dutch Fronkey style net on an 11 foot hammock. Fits great. I wouldn't try the 10 on an 11 footer.
This was me. I had totally quit camping as I couldn't stand the ground any longer. Since I've discovered the hammock a couple of years ago I've gone on 9 backpacking trips.
I'm in for a xl bearito!

I did the same thing with quilt leftovers but I didn't stuff mine enough. I need to rip it open and add some more to it. I started at about 3 inches thick but because it compresses so well it ends...
I accidentally took my 5.0 down to 23 wearing capilene 3 top and bottoms and only noticed a chill after I had to get out and take care of some "business". Up to that point i was warm.

I leave the bag at home and just strap it under the strap that holds down the top of my pack. Saved me about 4 ounces and it's always within easy reach.
Never thought I'd say this, but mine's a chair. It's a little Helinox chair one type chair. Sets up in seconds and makes rest stops much more restful. If I were doing more hiking than camping I...
I'm 6'3 and use a DIY hammock made out of wide hyperD and it's the most comfortable hammock I've used yet. I pair it with a DIY UQ that's 46 inches wide. Works great.

I'm always thinking about another hammock! That's why I use a Fronkey style net. I can move it to whichever one strikes my fancy.

Didn't make it out this past weekend but heading up to Grayson Highlands this weekend. Can't wait!

Here's mine. Completely custom. Worth the 1.7 oz penalty for some camp customization. And yes, I do weigh everything I take with me. It's a sickness. ...

Looks great! I also use the "making things for other people" excuse to sneak supplies for myself into Ripstop by the Roll orders.
I used the foam pad inside the hammock underneath me. That's when I decided to get a real under quilt.
I tried this and woke up in a pool of water at 50 degrees and was a little chilled as well until i got wet. I used a pad the rest of my trip. Cheap closed cell foam worked ok at those temps.
Welcome from Creedmoor.
I use a 5 footer and a 7 footer with whoopies larks headed to them and whoopie hooks for the hammock end. If I need to get closer to the trees I'll use the 5 footer on the bigger tree and then...
Be sure to consider the elevation changes when planning as well. Did a trip up to Gregory Bald last spring and hiked 7 miles on the first day with every step being uphill on the Wolf Ridge Trail.
I would like to hear this as well as I'm planning to make one for myself eventually. I think I have it pictured what you mean but clarification is always good.
It's a synthetic quilt. My son has asthma triggered by allergies and one of them is down. So if I want to avoid an ER trip I have to stick with synthetics.
Thanks for all the compliments! I'm already planning how to make a better one.
I used some illume15 for the outer shell, 1.0 hyper d for the inside and the filling is Climashield 3.6 oz all purchased from Ripstop by the Roll. I didn't want to try anything too complex for my...
Whipped out this one for my son tonight. It's basic and it's got ugly stitch work but he loves it. It's much better than the 3 lb sleeping bag he used on our last trip. ...
Hammock hiker here. I enjoy the camping but my hammock is primarily a means to sleep comfortably after the day's hiking.
Used it earlier and it didn't ask for validation.
I love porch mode! I like being able to see if there's a bear sitting there waiting to eat me for breakfast. Plus I use Dutch's tarpworms so I can batten down quick if I see one.
It is! Apparently my aunt used to sew a lot and this was hers. It's like new with just some wear of the gold paint from where her hands would rest.
Just picked up this portable Singer 221 from my Mom's house. Should be good enough for gear making. Amazing a 1951 machine still sews perfect. All it took was a little oil and defuzzing.

I've been using the Lawson cord with mine. It's a little stiff but works well once i figured out the proper way to make the loop in it.
Welcome from the guy guy 30 minutes northeast of you.
What I did with it and seems to work well for me is I split the shock cord in half on each end and then use mitten hooks and cordlocks to take it up to prussiks on my ridgeline. This allows me to...
