Are you saying you don't whip the ends? Just rely on the larks head to hold the gather?
Yes there are always trade-offs. I can't sit sideways with my legs hanging out for very long either or I get the same problem as you. I just like the tighter edges because they flap less and help...
The edge tension is related to the difference in the length of the material comparing the edges to the center where you lay.

<sigh> you guys are impossible.
I actually like the sides to be a little tight. It helps keep my quilt, pillow, etc. in the hammock.
