I prefer a CRL under the tarp. In adverse weather it seem to give it more strength from sagging without putting a ton of tension on the end of the tarp.
Just as important to me is the ease of...
I have cut old aluminum tent poles into 2-3" pieces, round and smooth the edges, and drill a small hole in one end to put a lanyard in.
I've also used pieces of an old broken hiking pole (slightly...
These are my thoughts exactly.. If given the time, I can spend a while playing/adjusting/tinkering with my set up mostly for fun.
I've been spending time in the woods now for about a decade. Over this time I've learned a few things about making gear vs buying quality (read, HF recommended) gear.
In my college days, I made...
I wish we had a tree like that on our campus..
I've always thought it'd be a sweet set up, but have never found the right tree..at the right time
This is definitely a topic I've been curious about so it's neat to see all the ideas yall have (as usual)..
For me separate silnylon bags for most of my stuff (mostly the sea-to-summit knock off...
Call me old fashioned but I just can't wrap my head around a hotter bottle freezing faster than a colder one given identical conditions.
I didn't mean to sound like a smarty pants, there's plenty...
A few principles brought up quite a while ago in this thread really bother me.
Please excuse my compulsion but i just read through a majority of this thread
The "Mpemba effect" is extremely...
I had the same idea a little while ago (we have a drop down ceiling anyway). You may have thought of this but you would need something to keep the head and foot ends spread apart. maybe a 8-9 foot...
I skip classes all the time to run out to the woods. I just think of it as an extenuation my botany lab and I am perfectly fine with it.
pee bottle!
the fun part would be pouring it out 40 feet down to the ground.
If only I could've learned those things that fast..
+1 on the light
black diamond orbit lantern for me
I've been eyeing this for a tarp ridgeline

the 2 mm x 60 m looks the most appealing, to me at least.
of course it isn't...
Hammock Forums: things are looking up
very true sir.
I really am glad that people are realizing the advantages of hammocking (cough superiority cough) but at the same time in the back of my mind I almost fear that it will get so many people out hiking...
I don't have a WBBB so I'm not sure what's used on it but I have a project going and I am using the "make your own" number 8 coil zipper by YKK from questoutfitters. I actually got all my material...
I'm about to get a german shepherd lab mix or the like and I'm very seriously considering making him a hammock to sleep in and that i could pitch up as a chair for people use.
Sounds to me if you hang it with more sag and lay more diagonal that should solve most of the problems. So basically I'm just agreeing with others.
I can't speak to the different hanging/build style...
I just bought about 20 not long ago from quest
http://www.questoutfitters.com/plastic.htm#Acetal%20Fasteners
I wouldn't be the guy to talk to about which stores carry them.
Welcome!
You ain't lyin!
I don't mean to steal you thunder at all, dropping in on your sil totally sucks.
But would that be a good way of cutting the fabric? Wouldn't it seal it and prevent any fraying?
I'm going to feel...
A while ago I know there was a thread discussing the over or under the ridge line (some could probably find the link?). From what I gathered from it, there was not a significant amount of wear along...
Ouch Charlie
This world is definitely in no short supply of ignorant people.
Sadly, I don't expect it to change either.
I too once was blown away at how complicated complete hammock setups can be. Honestly once you start small and add things for comfort and convenience (like whoopie slings, s-biners, weather shields,...
I can testify to the people usually don't look up thing.
I went on a day hike with my dad a few years ago on a busy trail (can't remember which). We climbed maybe 70 feet up a hill off the trail to...
I'm all ears.
Also, I was thinking about using the 0.344" diameter "nanolite" aluminum poles here
http://www.questoutfitters.com/tent_poles.htm#TENT%20POLES
but i'm not so sure they would flex...
pretty off topic... but is supplex mosquito proof?
So Cuben fiber is perfectly feasible to make a tarp from, correct?
So, I'm a huge fan of the clark vertex hammock. Not a fan at all of the price. So I have started planning to make one...really just thinking about it at this point. There sure is a lot a lot a fabric...
yup, I just cut mine and attached a whoopie sling.
the paint wouldn't decrease the amount of bite the ridges have with the rope would it?
So how does it feel being the __________ (insert favorite famous person here) of hammocking?
Your videos originally got me hanging and I'm sure these will get many more people to pop that can of...
Welcome, though I haven't been here all that long either. I'm at north GA college.
I may have taken a small pillow from a transatlantic flight that I spilled something on. They were going to trash it anyway, but it makes a world of difference. It's down too..
Ha, I'd like to see someone hang their WBBB from that.
Is it better to use a knot to secure the dead eye from the hammock or a locked brummell
like in this video

What do most people use?
Yeah, I have the small carabiner ones. "Not for Climbing"
They're rated at 50lbs - My guess is the rope tightener and not the carabiner
either way not really an issue as I use them on my tarp...
yup.. I love it here.. about how often do groups hang in georgia from the forum?
Yeah, I guess it's too easy to do to not do it and save yourself a wet behind or uq.
Thanks guys
This doesn't really answer your question but you could always look for three trees to use just like setting up the Clark Vertex. Wouldn't be the same trees, but you'd still be pretty close together.
So I'm looking at getting some whoopie slings, actually ordered the amsteel today but my question is would the loose end (after the bury) serve as a drip line for water runoff?
I would imagine so...
Hello, I'm Tom (as my name implies) From Dahlonega, GA. I've been lurking around the forums off and on for about a year. Just wanted to say hi and how awesome i think this community is. :)
Well I guess I may as well actually post something since I signed up here. I've been hanging for only a few years. I don't get out nearly as much as I'd like to (college student). I originally bought...
