60" long x 52" wide (wanted a wide one that fits around my shoulders)
Somewhere between 3-3.5" loft (is eyeballing with a ruler the only way to do this? Lol)
And 1lb, 6oz... SmileyMe down...
So this was definitely a learning experience, but something I'm glad I did. I made a few small mistakes, & it's not flawless but I have no doubt it'll work as intended!
I still have to thread...
I always bring them, but can't bring myself to use them... Hoping IF something were to come creeping through the night, I could hear it. Hearing coyotes yipping to each other is pretty awesome (&...
I have a double layer, so I'm not worried about getting bitten....but the NOISE mosquitos make at night!!! Would permethrin just kill them once touching the hammock? Or would it keep them away so I...
The only correct answer? Not nearly as much as I'd like to!
A small child and a job that goes through the weekends has cut into my opportunities to get outside the backyard much. This year, I'm...
Go for it, as long as you have the proper gear for rain/wind protection & insulation to stay warm.
The kids & parents all looked at me a bit oddly when I first set up my hammock... Now a few of...
It might not be an indicator of overall interest in camping, but take a look at scouting events. A few years ago, how many kids/leaders were using a hammock for anything other than a lounge chair?...
Good news: I won't be attempting this alone!
I originally posted on social media about possible classes to brush up on my skills/learn something new... Then a friend offered to help me along the...
My reasons: I need a larger UQ than commercially available. With materials, I can make an UQ at least $100 cheaper (not even including the increased price for a custom UW).
Besides those two...
The clothes for the morning & a light jacket are what I use for leg insulation with my 3/4 UQ... Never seems uncomfortable & I hate cold clothes in the AM
Functional, affordable, pretty... I can only budget for two of those [emoji14] I'm ok with my UQ looking like Frankenstein. But the excess material will be used to get the proper tension & such on my...
Besides minor fixes, I haven't sewn since middle school....and my experience with our sewing machine is sketchy at best.
I'm inches away from placing an order of materials for a DIY 20° 3/4 down...
Much appreciated!
Just received a SBP from the Amazon sale (crazy fast shipping) & I'm already trying to figure out what kind of suspension will work.
I currently use a WBBB w/webbing & was thinking of getting...
Every once in a while, it's nice to be reminded how good we have it, hanging in hammocks.
Last night my daughter, wife, & I had a "campout" in the backyard. I only have one hammock, so we all...
Most definitely! I used my Jarbridge well below the temp rating, thanks to a closed cell foam pad. Bigger & bulkier than an UQ, but a fraction of the cost!
Wow. As much of a "rush" as that might provide, I tend to enjoy the relaxing aspects of camping (and I'm a bit boisterous with hiking buddies on occasion). Cant imagine having THOSE types of...
Haha I second the OP. This forum had a ton of info, but your YouTube videos were the first things I found.
Is it possible to be a superstar of hammocking? Must be hard making trail miles when you...
Idk how much heavier it is, but an REI Flash 50, with the frame removed?
They're a few years past, but I imagine their newer 65s have the option to remove the frame as well?
Hahaha imagine her face when you tell the woman that you stuffed that woobie in the bottom of your pack for a few hours, then slept on top of it all night for warmth! 😁
You may be getting a nasty...
Waiting to leave for a mission one day, I strung up my hammock between two of our trucks to take a quick rest. It had hooks at the end of knotted rope, so I just hooked onto part of the vehicles......
This had me dying lol.
In all seriousness, I imagine I'd have to confront them, or spend the remainder of a trip without a tent or insulation (as I'd leave my bag inside the hammock).
I'd...
Colors/patterns comparison?!
Embrace it, like a small child clutching their security blanket! Lol
Most people I know gladly paid the penalty at CIF for not returning their woobie.
Woobie = pure happiness. Aka "the best piece of equipment the military issues"
Lol can you tell I'm partial to them? They can be found online & at military surplus stores
It still hurts to go downhill haha. Carrying my 3 year old to the top of Mt Major 2 days after probably contributed as wellhttp://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/08/18/9ymaruma.jpg
Just a day hike, but a fun outing nonetheless!
Got the Appalachia trailhead around 11pm, with plans to sleep in the car & head out early. Due to the "supermoon", the parking was packed with folks...
I've never been up either, but have seen the stream of people heading to & from them. I always enjoy seeing what people wear. Had the summit closed down right after we got up there due to fog &...
Awesome! Every time I go to Monadnock, I insist on taking Pumpelly. Sometimes it gets a bit sketchy in winter. Looks like you had a great day & the crowds were out (another reason to use Pumpelly)
I plan on completing an 18 mile section of the New England Trail in CT (53 out of the215 total miles) tomorrow, then a vacation in NH with my Family starting Friday, with (hopefully) a successful day...
For summer nights here in CT, I bring along a light fleece blanket & that seems to do the trick. I've used my Ozarks (Walmart) down bag & it does get a bit toasty.
Maybe a poncho liner would be...
I've only used mine as a TQ, but I was able to get it into the high 30's with nothing more than silkweight long johns.
It's definitely got its quirks, but for the price, it's a great deal
I've done the same... Ensures there's no draft around your feet!
Haha a Walmart down bag converted into a TQ might do the trick!
I'd say get the pack. Like said above, it'll give you a reason to get out & go hiking!
On a side note, you said you're in the 300lb range & lacking outdoor clothes... I know from experience that...
Hammock in a bishop bag, inside my garbage bag-liner.
Tarp in snake skins in an outside pocket.
I see no UQ's... And I thought cold butt syndrome was bad a foot or two off the ground!
I struggled to keep from spewing soda out of my nose. Lmao
If there's no real threat of rain, I usually attach it to one of the trees I'm hanging from. If it might rain, I attach it right near the head of the hammock.
I always have an extra mini biner or...
As for UQ's, take a look at synthetic. AHE makes a 3/4 length synthetic that is a good price & doesn't take up much space. (I use an REI Flash 50 & have tons of room with the Ozarks bag & Jarbridge)
Honestly, the Walmart Ozarks 32° down bag fits my 6'3", 310lb frame. It is snug in the shoulders, but it's being converted into a top quilt, so that becomes a non-issue.
I have a Cabela's brand...
I'd be in, depending on the work schedule. Looks like there's no camping at that state park. A personal favorite is Bigelow Hollow S.P. in Union. No car camping, though the closest site is about a 20...
Do you mean just staking one side down & throwing the other side up & over? I do that when it's nice out & I don't feel like looking up at a tarp... And it's easy to stake out if the weather turns.
I started cutting today! Having never done diy, the first cut was terrifying! So far the zipper & shock cord have been removed. I plan on removing the hood & getting some more down for the bag.
...
Poker chips? Hmmm... This would save me from trip to go buy tennis balls!
I was thinking of buying some additional down as well, but was thinking Duck down, as it's already a budget bag...
To those that have turned this bag into a TQ/UQ; is it worth harvesting the down in the draft tube & head area? Possibly just transfer it to the rest of the bag? Or more hassle than its worth?
Welcome from Tolland County, CT!
I got into hammocks because I started volunteering with scouts & hate sleeping on the ground.
Hammock preference is a personal thing, but if you can find...
I finally decided to pull the trigger on one of these. Coming from a history of synthetics, I was skeptical when I picked it up & saw how truly small & light it was. Bringing it home, I can see that...
Just tried resubmitted the thread & it went through. Maybe the phone just wasn't connecting well before?
