I believe this is probably true.
Did you put bar tacks at the top and bottom of the box stitching? I did a double box stitch with bar tacks and haven't had a problem.
If you didn't have a ridgeline I doubt you would be pulling it completely tight or else you wouldn't have any sag therefore you wouldn't have to cut a strap.:D
