Rotary cutters do make life easier. This is the mat I got. They're not the cheapest things ever, but all the lines can make squaring things up a little quicker.

Looks like it works and looks good doing it. I second the suggestion to try the grosgrain ridge. I would recommend sewing the halves together and then adding the grosgrain on top, I didn't have to...
