"depends" ??
never though about that for that extra bit of "personal" insulation.
"i'm cold"
Hmmmm.
might have to get there early to beat the crowds lining up for the closet service.
what kind of pie will be available ???
inquiring minds want to know.
a trail runs along the entire ridge.
as you hike up from where you leave the boat on the east side of the island, the campsites are just over the top of the hill.
but there are a few more places...
they're both pretty much the same.
the coolest site on the lake is 87 at the mouth of eagle creek.
as far as boat traffic, it's hit or miss on that lake.
i've paddled there sometimes on the...
been wearing out the rock climbing walls in the nearby OBED all year.
as long as weather holds, that's the priority.
but if it's cold, nasty, and raining, i'll be there.
are spammy and mm going to talk endlessly about stoves and pack weight again ???
my mind is still reeling from the info overload from last year.
as far as the car camping/frontcountry sites, i have no idea.
but the backcountry and most of the interior campsites are a ghost town pretty much year round.
exactly.
i always laugh as i see many on this forum endlessly jump from one product to another. or get wrapped up in every little technical aspect of what's just a simple sleep system. or go...
you left out a choice, naked.
i tromp all over the plateau and the Smokies here in Tennessee.
never met a rattler or copperhead that wanted to be around me any more than i wanted to be around them. and can never remember ever...
when you paddle out from panther, and out into the main lake, there's a very cool island straight across out in the middle in the lake from there.
it has a massive cliff for jumping,40'+,
it could...
the section pin pointed on his GPS coordinates is about an hours paddle east from the panther creek put in.
i've always felt a bit uneasy about parking there overnight, but have never had, or heard...
calderwood is a beautiful lake to paddle. it's steep forested banks give you a feeling of paddling down a deep gorge. and the nightly fog bank that rolls down the lake is a cool sight to see.
but...
actually this is the season to be kayak camping on any island. lake levels are low, so all of the driftwood is high and dry and easy pickins for fueling the cremation ceremonies.
...
i kayak and camp on numerous islands on cherokee lake. it's not a problem.
other area lakes though have TWRA land is clearly posted for no camping, but TVA land is fair game.
this time of year...
not too crazy about measly little campfires either.
that's why when i'm outdoors, i build incinerating infernos that can be seen from space.
just ask anyone here who's hiked/camped with me.
i use a big agnes dual core.
i inflate it close to full, then when i turn in, i release air until it conforms to the hammock, but still leaves a bit of air cushion.
i have no problem with it being...
i gotta go with the hiking.
for me, the hammock is nothing more than one of the tools you carry along with you on a journey.
i've been to a few small 'hangs', they're fun to be sure, and have...
be sure to dress appropriately.........

i have a buddy who's a framing contractor.
i asked him recently to save me the cut outs from the two big windows at the front of the house when they wrapped and trimmed the tyvek.
he did, and set...

just a few weeks ago it was like this up at #30............

That may not have been a belch. (if you know what i mean.)
so all i have to do is say, "i'm in" ???

north mills road begins off of hwy 280, just behind the asheville regional airport.
follow north mills into the north mills recreation area. follow the road through the area as it turns to gravel. a...
yeah, "somebody" early last winter along the AT learned those 3 simple words would crank up a perpetual motion machine that wouldn't stop until hitting the trail the next morning.
i don't care how...
a call to action if there ever was one !!!
triple digits were achieved up front in the more expensive seats.
glad to hear the cheap seats were toasty as well.
outstanding !!!
i routinely hike multi day, high mileage hikes solo across the Great Smokey Mountains.
great way to sort things out.
great way to find out just what you have deep down inside...
my thoughts exactly.
i doubt all of the combined hammocks hung in the woods could ever do any more to the trees used, than natural occurrences like bears clawing bark getting the sap etc...
one...
1st and foremost.
not, i repeat, NOT endlessly talking about gear while around the fire or on the trail.
i really do like the title of this thread.
as a long distance x-c hiker, i learned experience will eventually teach you what you need and don't need.
everything i carry is considered a tool you need to get you through your trip.
i'm not...
i have what i need as far as amsteel whoopies.
so i hope those that need em' can benefit from your generosity.
but nevertheless, Happy Thanksgiving to those on this board i've built campfires for...
weekend before last i was hiking across the Smokies.
about dark thirty, set up camp, lit a small fire, cooked dinner, and turned in for another long day ahead.
later that night i was awakened to...
it must be awesome up there at this very minute !!!
best time to hike is after a heavy rain or snowfall.
if i weren't heading up there this afternoon, i'd already be in the Smokies hiking along a...
HA !!! it's the "estrogen" on most of my hikes that determine the set up time.
heck, i wouldn't know how to set up in the daylight.
seems as though the 26 degree temps are just right for the germination of excuses.

it's those fast movin' chevy's i'm worried about.
i always say, in spite of the forecast.
heck, by saturday everyone will need a shower anyway.
a typo perhaps ???
21.9 on each of the three days is what you meant, right ???
looking forward to it.
better eat your salt boy, i'm going to be there ready to hike.
protection from animals has never crossed my mind as a reason to carry.
back in late winter while my hike partner and i were hiking the AT, i saw a local guy walking the trail with an assault...
45cal. semi auto.
on top of my pack, on the ground right where my hand will 1st drop out of the hammock.
though it'll stay in the car when out car camping with others.
spent 3 days in the fourney area a few weeks ago.
a couple of side trips up jonas creek and up to andrews bald as well.
the final night was spent on the upper site at #68.
that's by far the best...
