Thanks guys, makes sense.

Thanks guys, makes sense.
I've used an old (heavy, synthetic) sleeping bag up until now but enough is enough!
I'm looking at purchasing my first down TQ and could do with the opinion of some of you guys with more...
Inwood near Basingstoke in Hampshire is a semi wild site. They're happy with hammocks and open fires. I've been there a few times, always good. http://www.inwoodcamping.co.uk/
I made a DIY UQ as well (poncho liner) but I couldn't get it fitted and cinched neatly enough to trap the air. That's why I took a punt on the DD underblanket. Just got back from giving it a try in...
Just picked up one. Little thinner than I expected, but also a little smaller as well. Weight is 950 grams (2.1 pounds). It's got a synthetic fill as you know so I hope it's going to work well. It...
A timely post as I am about to make my own version, thanks for posting.

Welcome from me in deepest Berkshire. :shades:
Yeah, if you get sweaty in that, there's no other way out than, gulp, take to the ground...
If you don't fancy stealthing it to begin with, there are UK campsites that have pitches with trees and are cool with hammocks. A couple I have used (admittedly not in your area) are Blackberry Woods...
Welcome to HF!
Yep, it's a good tarp.I bought it to 'upgrade' the standard HH tarp. I still use that one if I think it's not going to rain or if I want to travel light but the bigger tarp is great if weight is not...
BTW tie a small piece of white cord around the head end cord next time you set up. That way when you pull it out of the bag you'll immediately know which way around you are.
Six to eight feet? Your pitch looks wider than that from the pics but you're right, that's still a bit narrow. Most people eyeball the distance based on the experience of a few nights hanging. For...
I think if you hang in an area with larger than average trees you learnt to take bigger straps pretty quickly. In my short hanging career I've not needed to do this but I can see it can limit your...
Hello 2bee, welcome to the forums!
Thanks for the post Bob. I made it through my first hammocking year with a CCF pad but want to get a UQ for this year. Good to see your thoughts on this product as it's obviously an attractive...
Hello Hendan, do a search for DIY underquilts or UQ's. Failing that, try CCF mats.
Nice one, thanks for posting.
.... has got that 30 deg. angle pretty good but he could've used tree huggers.

:)
That's a new one on me, didn't know you could find HH's in 'normal' stores.
Nothing as far as I know, UKhammocks are up north as are DD hammocks I believe. Hammocking is still a minority interest here.
Nice to see you here Darren.
Yep, CCF pads are a vapour barrier which seem to affect people differently, some are fine and some end up with a bit of dampness. I cover my pad with a poncho liner which seems to help a lot. Ideally...
Just noticed they have a "design your own sleeping bag" service.

I wonder if they would make a top quilt?
Interesting products on there - thanks for posting.
Hi Colgon and welcome.
Most hammocks are made of ripstop nylon so are breathable. Your thermarest is a vapour barrier so that might be the problem. The fact you were wrapped up tight might be a...
That's great. Having seen that, my 10 year old wants one now :)
...so the wife says to me.

....end of the summer last minute hang this weekend. It's unseasonably warm here in the U.K. and myself and the 10 year old are going for a quick trip to a new (to me) site that's opened up about 45...
Just a quick (obvious) one - hang the hammock so the prevailing wind, if there is any, is blowing perpendicular to the length of the tarp and not whistling down the head or foot end. Oh, and centre...
Hi Paul, welcome to the forum, every resource you could imagine is here so it's a great place to be. Hammock camping in the U.K. can be tricky but it can be done! You just need to devote more time to...
...to have my HH Expedition back, expertly modified with it's brand new zips. Totally changes the feel of the hammock for me, it's nice to have the choice of entry as well. I left the bottom opening...
Wow, that is painful to look at. He looks like you should leave some change on the ground beside him :)
I bought one of these a few months ago for £6.95...
Welcome R.E.
Your HH will be a lot better than an Army issue hammock - you need to post some beach pics to make us all jealous :)
...I saw this poster today and thought "I couldn't agree more."

:D
Welcome to the forum JDT.
Mine is in with ZQ at the moment, looking forward to getting it back and enjoying the flexibility of the zip.
Let's not forget there's paracord and then there's paracord. There is a lot of cheap stuff floating around that is braided and not the multi strand genuine stuff that is almost certainly going to be...
If you hold up suspect fabric and blow through it with your hand on the other side it should give you a clue as to whether it's treated or not as you won't feel your breath with nylon that's been...
Yep, after wrapping my ccf pad loosely in a poncho liner, comfort increased greatly.
There is a pot handle picture on their site, says it holds up to heat well so yeah, good idea.
Welcome Chris, nice to see you here. I believe Shewie on this forum travels to Scotland frequently so hopefully he will chip in with some ideas for sites.
At £2.99, worth a punt maybe? Sounds pretty good from the description.
My pad use in my HH Expedition has evolved to a T shaped pad using 1 1/2 CCF pads Connected together with soft velcro straps and the the whole thing wrapped loosely in a poncho liner. Pretty warm and...
You can bodge your own supershelter by hanging a cheap 'leisure' hammock right under your HH and tightening up the suspension. You can put a pad, opened out spare bag etc. right in that spare hammock...
Welcome Geordie, nice to see you here.
I'm trying just that this weekend. I may take my cheapo lightweight hammock along as well and string it up tight under the HH and line that with the poncho liner and pad and see how that works too.
I think the UQ just wraps around the slightly protruding feet doesn't it? And a pad will be placed diagonally so will cover head to toe as well. No experience with a BB (if that's the hammock in...
