Optimum? I'd say the max of 26". Can't think of any reason why 24 or 25" would be better except weight. But 24 or 25 should also do the job.

I believe it is sized to accept up to a 26" wide pad, and either 2" thick or maybe 3" thick?
If I planned to mainly use a pad for insulation, I'd have a hard time choosing other than a JRB BMBH....
