A lot depends on your exact setup.... Nylon and flames don't mix.... So you definitely need to ensure that your candle or other flame based lantern is well clear of the tarp.....

What's wrong with simply larks heading the fixed loop of the whoopee through the hammock channel, that's how my dd is rigged, I then personally use carabiners to attach the variable loop to my tree...

Tarp under ridgeline for me but again thats because the loops on the dd tarp make this the easiest way to hang it. I normally feed my spare ridge line back under the tarp (but not tight) to clip...
