My friend and I are always surprised that we rarely see other backpackers on the trail. We don't see many hikers either except near road access or major sites.
We did another section of the Sheltowee Trace in the Daniel Boone National Forest of Kentucky.

There are so many options at the gorge.
When Tunnel Ridge Rd is closed I tend move to Bison Way trailhead and hit Indian Staircase, Indian Arch, Hanson's Point, Veranda, Greys Arch, etc.; Douglas...
Sorry, slightly off topic. But, you all are probably the most active in Ohio. If there is objection I'll start a separate thread.
First, why does it seem like all the place in Ohio to backpack...
I usually carry a small pad and a cut off pencil and make notes at the end of ea day.
I really started doing trip reports for my parents to see some of the things I do. And now, it's fun for me...
Great feedback - I'm certainly not a great storyteller but, I do enjoy sharing my experiences in a trip report. There's some good info shared here to consider in my future reports.
Seems like I...
Much like vlogs are taking the place of blogs; trip reports seem to have swung from written reports to videos. I'm not sure what brought about the transition - maybe advances in technology and ease...
Lake Vesuvius?
I did part of the Honey Creek Loop as I came through on the Sheltowee Trace. At the time I made a mental note that I'd like to come back but, have not done so yet.
Most water filters only filter out bacteria and other organisms, not chemicals. Charcoal filters will help get rid high iron and other things that make it taste bad. Still not sure they filter the...
A paddle trip sounds fun. But, I don't have the gear for a paddle trip.
Anybody getting out this weekend?
I'm thinking about hitting the Indiana Adventure Trail because I've not been there. It's 25 miles and shouldn't be too crazy. Only negative is lack of water...
I'm looking to get out the weekend of 10/21. I'm off that Monday, 10/23, and could leave that Friday, 10/20.
I'm pretty open on where to go and would welcome some company. Would like to stay...
+1 on what's already been mentioned.
My recommendation would be to day hike the Auxier Ridge area (Star Gap Arch, Double Arch, Courthouse Rock, Auxier Ridge). Then head out Rough Trail to Gray's...
Great area...Somewhat of a hidden gem, IMO.
Well, we got flooded out on the Sheltowee. We hiked most of the first day in the rain and after several knee deep, or higher, crossings we came to one of unknown depth that we guessed to be at least...
I'm heading down Fri night to start another section of the Sheltowee - Heading north from Flat Rock Church in Whitley, KY.
Looking forward to a much needed unplugged week on the trail! :thumbup1:
I would be interested, except I don't have a kayak. :(
Looks like you had a good trip. Weather turned out pretty decent. Any bushcraft clinics this time?
FYI - He doesn't text.
I'm thinking about going to Red River Gorge this weekend. Just a relaxing trip that will basically either be car camping or a short hike in from the truck.
Current thought is to leave Fri after...
I didn't realize the weekend of the 15th was Easter weekend. I have family commitments and won't be able to join you all that weekend.
Trees Co. is the Shawnee guru so, I'll defer to him on...
I'd be interested in Shawnee as it seems about as close as you all come to the southwest. I'll check my availability.
I'm soon to be unemployed so I can't take any days off since I get them paid...
Nice find!
I have been to Eagle's Point Buttress a few times. There's a stand of pines up in that area that would be a great place to hang. I intend to go back and hang there.
I agree, it was always a fairly easy place to go to when a you needed a quick place to camp (which I think it why it's seeing a lot more use). The whole CC area has definitely seen a lot more use...
Surprisingly, I have not. Lately I've been exploring more off trail stuff.
Going off marked trails and cold weather helps with the crowds.
Dolly Sods is on my short list of places to go. I think you might have been one that mentioned it was a good place to go in the summer months as the climate seems to stay more moderate. Yes?
I...
It was a good time. I'd fallen in a rut of backpacking from point A to B and not taking many relaxing trips. This was a nice change to hike in a few miles, set up camp and day hike to explore areas...
It was a mix of marked trails, unmarked trails and bushwacking.
I did not get waypoints for the arches. Some of them can be found on-line though.
Yes, we saw a lot of cars in the lots Sunday and we saw a lot of people when on the marked trails.
Took a day off and spent a long weekend in Red River Gorge, along with most everybody else in the area!
Trip Report Here
Quite a few people at RRG but, it was a great trip.
Trip Report Here
For now, I'm heading to RRG next weekend. There's a couple arches I've tried to find w/o success. I'm hoping I can find them now while there's no foliage.
Looking at going down Friday morning and...
The weather forecast for this weekend looks less than ideal with rain showers Sat & Sun.
Right now I'm eyeing the following weekend, Feb 17 - 19. I'm thinking taking the Fri off work since most...
I was thinking about trying to make a trip to Red River Gorge or Shawnee. Don't have a weekend picked out as I will prolly go based upon weather.
I'm leaning toward RRG so that I could go down...
Very nice!
I day hiked around there a few years ago while visiting a friend in North Vegas. An awesome place - Not what most folks look for around Vegas.

Had a good time and was honored to be present when Trees Company & his bro earned another tier toward their Bushmaster's badge!

I got my backcountry permit - No need to stealth camp!
That's the map from the DNR site. I was hoping for a better one. I'm curious if there may be natural water sources within the wilderness area. Looks to be a least one stream from Google.
As I...
Mohican is a bit farther than I want to travel for the one night (Sat/Sun) I have available. So, I'm looking at going to Shawnee State Forest. Does anyone have a better map the than the PDF...
Sounds good. Hopefully I'll see you all down there.
Well, not sure what the gameplan is here. I'll prolly head down tomorrow after work. Since it will be dark by the time I get there I'll prolly just camp somewhere along Tunnel Ridge Rd. Fri night...
If you are not aware they had a wildfire in the Auxier Ridge area last week. Not sure how much impact it had on that area. Still not sure what area you all are thinking but, something to consider.
I would like to try to get out somewhere this weekend. I'll try to keep an eye on what area is decided upon.
Anyone heading out from the SW Ohio area?
Just an FYI - I did a section of the...
If RRG is the plan will it be camping at/near the car or out on the trail?
Red River Gorge, Big South Fork (TN/KY) or a section of the Sheltowee. All three of these can check your boxes. My only concern would be RRG - I don't know your son's maturity level at six but, RRG...
RRG will likely be packed, especially in the popular spots.
Our trip from last year to CW.
