I actually have to get my gear out of the Jeep at some point and review what I used and didn't. My legs are a wreck today though so I have just been trying to stretch and recover so I can do more...
Thanks everyone! The hike was a success. I moved a lot faster than I expected and only spent 1 night in the woods as opposed to the two I was planning so I was way over packed. Even if I spent two...
I am 100% sure I am over packed. I do that all the time on trips. When I am done I plan on taking stock to see what I can learn from the experience.
I have to pick up my permit first thing in...
LOL, I get like this before trips... obsessive. Once things kick off ok I start to relax. Right now I am having a beer to help make sure I get some sleep tonight.
That looks like a wonderful place to camp.
Done, I obsessed over it to. Its a habit I picked up when I was learning to fly.
T.P. is packed! Thanks!
Tomorrow morning I set out for my first multi-day trip on the AT through the SNP. I am starting at Thornton Gap and heading north to the Dickie Ridge Visitor Center (27.4 miles). I am planning on...
What an awesome looking trip!
The Hennessy Hex tarp is quite nice. Its heavier than I would have wanted but I saved a little money compared to one of the super light weight cuben fiber tarps.
I have both the Jam 35L and 70L. I use the 35L for day hikes and the 70L for overnights. They are super comfortable and adjustable. They are pretty no thrills, i.e. one pocket on the back (good...
Last night I ventured out into the "wilderness" of the Chopawamsic Backcountry Area (Prince William Forest National Park) for my first all night hang. Long story short, I survived. :)
First off,...
Nice, looks like you had fun.
I plan on doing my first over nighter tomorrow or Tuesday night depending on the chance of rain.
I don't have enough experience to really know but I find it hard to believe that 1 1/2" is much better than 1". Regardless, I feel it is fair to err on the side of protecting the trees, just wish I...
I know... I have two sets of tree straps and both are 1". I ordered a set of 1 1/2" straps. Seems like all of the places I have seen with restrictions want 1 1/2" as the minimum so it makes sense to...
For those of you interested in camping in Prince William Forest NP I was finally able to confirm today that hammocks are now allowed as long as you use 1 1/2" or larger tree straps on trees 6" in...
All this talking about how fast to hike is killing me... I just want to get out and hike. I haven't managed to do any hikes longer than 5 miles yet. This weekend was beautiful but I took my dog with...
Thanks Oldpappy, I was actually starting to think that going South to North might be a good idea. I just have to figure out the logistics of getting to and from wherever it is I decide to set off...
Nice job. I posted my little review a few weeks ago when I got mine. Can't wait for the weather to warm up a bit so I can actually sleep out in it in the woods. :)
I have done a lot of the side trails over the years. Not all of them of course because most of hiking in the SNP has been from Swift Run Gap north to Front Royal. I grew up visiting Big Meadow and...
Very cool Uncle Clark.
In other news the rangers at Belle Isle State Park wrote to let me know that using hammocks stretched across the pads at the primitive camp sites their was acceptable. They...
I will definitely take some pictures and make some notes. Just wish I could make the trip sooner than later but I need to wait until the over night lows are in the 50's so I don't spend the night...
I am not sure when the web site content will get updated but this is the email I got:
"Dear Craig,
The management team discussed the camping hammock policy for the Chopawamsic Backcountry. The...
It has. I was communicating with the staff last week and they just changed the rules. It will probably be my first overnight in the new hammock in a couple of weeks.
Lot's of nice looking spots out west. My list of future camp sites is definitely growing.
I have been hiking at Sky Meadows and planned to check out the back country camping area in the next few weeks. That is a beautiful park.
No offense at all! I am a beginner in many senses.
I am waiting until the weather warms up just a bit. Would like the overnight temps not to go below 55 or so right now for my first trip and the...
Just curious to see if folks here have a good list of places to hang in VA. I am trying to compile a list of possible spots to visit and so far it isn't very long (other than the AT):
...
Ok, so far I think that the general consensus is that my mileage goals are probably reasonable. That is a bit of a relief and will help me think through some of the mundane logistics like how I am...
I hope to have a chance to set everything up again soon. When I do I will take more pictures. Probably not video though unless I can find someone else to narrate. I spent a couple of years working as...
I need to play more with the setup. The two trees I have available in my backyard to hang the hammock from are 13' apart. It seems like with the suspension components I have right now I could use...
Ha det!
I spent a year going to school in Bergen but never it made it further north than Trondheim. It sure is cold up there in Harstad right now!
Indeed! You are correct about the hammock not being centered. I didn't futz with it too much between snow showers. I just wanted to get it hung a give it a try.
I would be happy, I think, to be able to average something on the order of 12 to 16 miles per day. Initially I was thinking about doing Front Royal to Thornton Gap (sections 1 and 2) in two days (one...
It is marked as proposed on the map but I haven't seen anything on Joplin yet but to be fair I haven't gone up Joplin that far in more than a year so they might have already. I will have to take a...
Prince William Forest Park (http://www.nps.gov/prwi/index.htm - for those the aren't familiar with it) up until yesterday did not allow hammocks. Fortunately that has changed. I just got this email...
I am somewhat torn by whether or not to do some side trails on the way. I have never hiked on the AT but I have done a large number of the side trails in SNP over the years. When I went to JMU I used...
I have never stepped foot on the AT but I plan on starting taking it section by section in April or May starting in the SNP. Right now the plan is to start from Front Royal and work south doing a...
This is an interesting thread. I was just investigating doing some camping at Prince William Forest in VA (http://www.nps.gov/prwi) since it is about 10 minutes from me and discovered that they have...
Brrrrrrr. I hate being cold so the idea of camping out in those temps makes me shiver. Then again I had hypothermia once (I was in a car accident in which I ended up in a creek in January) and just...
So, in the picture of the hammock above I guessed that the left side (in the picture) where the Northwoods Hammock tag is, was the head side. That was the way I laid down anyway...
I see what you...

Hanging out in the hammock. Am I facing the right way?
I just got my Wolf in the mail today and haven't had a chance to even hang it yet but I wanted to start a thread about it since I am pretty **** excited to get my first real hammock. My plan is to...
My hammock just showed up in the mail. Yay! Too bad it is cold, windy, and dark outside.
Sounds obvious but check for coconuts before hanging. I was at a resort in the Bahamas and I climbed into one of several oceanside hammocks strung up and nearly got brained by a coconut.
I placed an order this morning from the Jacks and got a shipping notice 40 minutes later. That is pretty impressive.
Oh well bought the HH skins and bundled that order with a couple of titanium stakes for the tarp at the same time... LOL
Thanks all, I think I have it now. The only question left is which skins to get. Right now I have it narrowed down to the Hennessy skins or the MountainGoat Mesh sleeves.
A bigger pack? LOL. That would make packing easier. I admit I to wondering whether or not I should have gotten the GoLite Jam 70L instead of the 35L but right now my goal is to get 1 or 2 nights out...
That is a good video. I am still unclear on how well that works with a tarp hooked up using this method:
