Slowhike, did you ever try method #2? It looks so clean. I'm thinking if I could get the whipping tight enough it might work, but then it is the whipping taking the pressure rather than the hammock body...right?

This idea seems better suited to managing weight and still maintains a clean profile. Did you give this a try, Jeffjen? Slowhike?
I want to try something like one of these methods on my next hammock. I know this is an old thread, but the information from towards the beginning of HF is so dang useful.
