In my memory the access trail never gets really steep, and about half way up it's mostly level. I don't currently have access to my map so no "good" topo, but the ATC's interactive map seems to agree with me, at least it looks no better / worse than wise to the parking lot. "Our" Wise parking lot doesn't show up on this map, but I think I have a good idea where it is.
Find Troudale VA, & go a bit west, click on the "shelters" & "Parking" boxes & there you are.
Something semi interesting: I thought Over Mt was a much longer drive for me as compared to the wise. But, the wise is 358 miles, Old Orchard is 350 & If I am correct on where Over mountain is, it's only 352 miles from me. So they are all within 10 miles drive time for me. This doesn't change my vote, but if distance is a concern for you, plot the routes & compare, you may be surprised as I was. I honestly was expecting Over Mt to be at least 50 miles further.
