I do it that way most of the time...I just wrap the cord around the tree, then trucker's hitch it to the D-ring. It ends up separated just like your illustration. I used nite-ize for the first time last trip and I'll probably keep using them...just a bit more convenient than the trucker's hitch in normal conditions, but when my fingers are really cold or the trees are too far apart for the trucker's hitch on the D-ring, it'll be a lot better.
I've used those nite-ize figure 9 knots thing but still prefer a truckers hitch. No extra weight or something else to break, carry, or loose. Line goes around tie point, trucker's hitch tightens guy line, and I go night, night.
Let us know how those figure 9's hold up under extreme cold.
