Not sure. The tulle or nylon probably just spreads the load over a larger area reducing any chaffing of the bug net by the line. The majority of the weight of the tulle triangle is in the grosgrain. The small piece of tulle is almost weightless. The offset cost is as noted fragile when compared to no-see-um or ripstop nylon.
