Well, you are correct that I had no underquilt. It can definitely be done with just a pad. I went down to 7 degrees Farhenheit, but I wasn't exactly warm. You need to add some kind of additions to go around your shoulders when you're in the hammock. 30's is definitely reasonable with a pad in my opinion. For me, I just cut some pieces of one pad and added it onto the other with duct tape. A double layer hammock will help if a pad is your insulation of choice, though, because it will keep it in place, but it can be done in a single layer hammock like I did.
