I'm going to put a strip of some really lightweight ripstop (poly) I found at wallyworld a couple of inches wide down the length of my sock and widen it a bit. The ripstop is not coated at all; I can breath normally thru it. I think I was getting a little compression from the last one and the strip of untreated ripstop should help with condensation.
Since you have some DIY 'sock' experience, whatya think?
Yep, sounds good to me. I've been able to breathe very well in my DWR sock, but breathable ripstop sounds like a plan.
There have been many times where I was happy to have the DWR (when the wind was really beating up on me, for instance -- I took 2 "direct hits" up at Hurricane shelter, and it didn't help that I had camped on a ridge although the view was
nice). The DWR blocked the blows really well. My only difficulties came from having one tarp stake blow out a few times. (Lesson learned was to tie out to trees or rocks when at all possible.)
Maybe you could put that breathable strip up at the top of the sock, where the tarp would normally block the wind?
