If you miss out on the lottery, another option is to hike it from the back side starting at Horseshoe Meadows if you can get time off for a longer trip. Its easier to get a permit (no dealing with the lottery). I did that trip in 5 days in 2009. You see a lot less people too!
Funny, I was always wondering what that back route was. I remember the first (and only) Whitney hike i did.. my wife and I hit the upper camp by noon with our three friends about 2 hours behind us. Ate lunch, dumped our stuff and hiked to the top. Came back down around 9:30 at night with it already freezing and our friends asleep to find out i'd left the fuel canister for my stove in the car!
Good times. A multi-day trip would be nice. My wife and I were practically running out because we wanted to get down to our other campsite and pack up before having to pay for another day since we were heading over to Lundy Lake (by Mono).
