Best bet is to go to bear mountain and go south bound on the AT to west mountain shelter. Plenty of hanging spots there and great views on the way there. 6 mile hike one way.
I've hung the entire AT in NY. The only spot that really didn't have good hanging spots was RPH shelter.
No problems from anyone with hanging on the AT.
Honestly the southern part of the NY AT was the most scenic. But more strenuous due to the constant elevation changes.
Leave at 6am... Take throgs to the cross bronx expressway. Take that to route 87N and then take that to palasades north (after the tapanzee). The palasades takes you right to bear mountain at the traffic circle to the right. Takes less than 2 hrs on a sat morn and you beat the toll at bear mountain.
Go into the park police station and register your car for multiday hiking no charge.
