Hi David, I would think the SRL is needed to support your bug net, also, if you just moved it outside of the net and the gathered ends, then I think it would be forced down tight to the outside of the cinched ends when the hammock is loaded, which would give no real advantage over the stock method.
You could extend the RL and fix it further up the straps or whoopies. It would need to be longer to maintain the 83% ish proportions. But this still wouldn't support your net.
I have added a continuous loop through one cinched end, shortened the original RL by the length of the loop and fixed both together with a Dutch biner. This maintains the original RL length and allows me to disconnect the RL when I'm just sitting in the hammock. I find it works really well. You could use a soft shackle instead of a biner if you like.
