I actually thought about doing this. The problem I ran into is that with the current way I laid out the fabric, the spreader bar would have had to have a largely open "V" shape to it in order for the hammock to lay correctly. Next time I make one, if I cut the fabric differently I may be able to give that a try.
The thing you'll have to be careful of is the lateral force on the spreader bar. If you just tie off from the hammock to the spreader bar, then you'll have ~1/3 of your total load being applied to the center of the spreader bar. So, you'd either have to compensate for that by having a cord on the other side attached to the tree suspension, or by having a big thick stick that can handle the force. If I start hiking with a broom handle as a hiking stick, that might be the way to go
