Make sure you really pull that spike through the loop. If you only pull it through enough to pass the sides of the loop, you're not going to get a nice, meaty knot to rest on. Cram that whoopie end well into that top intersection of the vertical part of the strap leading to the tree and the top of the marlin spike loop.
Then, once you've adjusted the whoopie to where you want it, pull down hard to seat it into the knot. In the same motion, milk your constrictor (this is the weirdest phrase EVER) so you have a good lock that's not going anywhere.
