This might actually be a hopeful sign...maybe.
Having slept in a great number of cotton hammocks indoors and out, I've also washed almost as many. From Mayan to Brazilian, when washed they all shrink like crazy. I line dry my cotton hammocks, which helps, but not that much. Since you purchased it at a thrift shop, it's a safe bet it was washed. If it was put in the dryer (probably was) it will be even worse.
Here is the good news: cotton stretches back out.
The catch is that it requires a significant amount of time. When I wash my Brazilians and rehang them, the edge that is normally at about knee level, is above my shoulders. First time I did it, I swear I wept a little. Climbed in and wasn't terribly comfortable, but good enough to sleep. By morning, it had stretched back out to within probably 20-30% of normal. Within three days, it was back like nothing had happened.
My Mayans stretch too, but they seem to spring back after a single night. Might be worth a shot to spend a few hours in it and see if it expands any. Or, ya know, it's just a $1 hammock.
