I use a pack liner, and load my quilts in loose (not in their stuff sacks) so they will conform to the pack and the other gear in there. That way once I get it all loaded, those things really compress down.
+1 exactly the way i do it. i also pack pack laying on its back that way the quilts hold food and other things against my back. closer gear is to my back the lighter it feels.
It's not procrastinating, its proactively delaying the implementation of the energy-intensive phase of the project until the enthusiasm factor is at its maximum effectiveness.
