You're right, it's a personal preference thing. Here's mine.
I can't stand any kind of buckle. I've tried them all and scratch my head and wonder how folks can recommend them, but they do.
My suspension consists of a 5' tree strap with a loop sewn into one end, a marlin spike, a 5-1/2' whoopie sling with a Dutch Whoopie Hook in the fixed eye which connects to a 3-1/2" diameter continuous loop larks-headed onto the hammock end knot.
My straps are Harbor Freight 900# break strength and the whoopies & loops are Dynaglide. The spike is a trail stick fir a total weight of 3.1 ounce for both ends combined.
