Yeah those burgundy SMC rings will not work, for gripping webbing or amsteel.
As far as the SMC rings that you first used, I am blown away that you ovalled them. I used those rings for a dozen hangs (pinching amsteel) and never had a problem.
IMO, the best suspension option out there is the webbing/cinch setup from Warbonnet. The webbing is the perfect middle ground between lightweight and plenty strong. The cinch buckles seem to be recently updated and are even lighter than before. The amsteel dogbone makes connecting to hammock body a breeze.
I know it's not the 'homegrown' suspensions setup that I bet you were looking to implement...but it's a great setup.
OTOH, you might consider revisiting the first SMC rings you used, because with those you can use it to pinch amsteel or webbing no problem. Yes there are longevity issues with pinching the amsteel, but there are ways around it.
