What does the sliding toggle add (other than being a toggle keeper)? You could use the same setup with a toggle (found or not) and marlinspike hitch right?
You are right, and I have done it because I like like the smaller cord attached directly to the tree straps. I can get by with shorter straps, less cord, but I like the fact that the sliding toggle is already there and dependable. Also it acts similar to a pulley when you undo the half hitch, leaving the hammock in place and pulling on the free end. Though I dont think you would want to pull it too tight, its just a wood toggle.
